What is product design?

Product design is the process of identifying market opportunities, defining problems, and developing innovative solutions in the form of physical or digital products. It involves understanding user needs, creating prototypes, and working closely with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing teams to bring ideas to life. Product designers combine creativity, technical skills, and user-centered thinking to ensure that products are both functional and visually appealing.

How do product designers typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the development process?

Product designers work closely with engineers and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Early on, designers participate in brainstorming sessions and user research to define product requirements alongside product managers. As concepts are developed, designers create wireframes and prototypes, sharing them with engineers to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with business goals. Regular feedback loops, design reviews, and cross-functional meetings are common, allowing designers to refine their work based on input from both technical and strategic perspectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure the end product is user-centered, technically sound, and aligned with company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Designer, you need proficiency in user-centered design, prototyping, and visual communication, often backed by a degree in design or related experience. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite and experience with user research and testing platforms are typical requirements. Strong collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills help product designers translate user needs into effective solutions within cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that products are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, meeting user expectations and business goals.

What are the qualifications to get a job in product design?

The qualifications to get a job in product design depend on your specific responsibilities and position. Prototype designers and drafters typically need a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related subject, although some drafters can begin with an associate degree or specialist knowledge of AutoCAD. Production designers may need experience or a bachelor’s degree in materials science, such as chemistry or chemical engineering, which helps them choose the appropriate materials for a product. Important skills include strong technical ability and interpersonal communication.

While both roles overlap, Product Designers often handle a wider range of responsibilities, integrating business goals with user needs, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing usability and interaction.

Do product designers get paid well?

Product designers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced designers with skills in tools like Adobe Creative Suite or Figma can command higher pay, especially in tech-focused companies.

Is product design still in demand?

Product design remains in demand as companies focus on creating user-centered products and improving user experience. Skilled designers with knowledge of tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch are sought after across technology, consumer goods, and digital industries.

What do you do as a product designer?

A product designer is responsible for creating the overall look, feel, and user experience of a product, often combining skills in design, user research, and prototyping. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop concepts, wireframes, and visual designs, using tools like Adobe XD or Figma. The role requires understanding user needs and translating them into functional, aesthetically pleasing products.

What jobs can I do with product design?

With a background in product design, you can pursue roles such as UX/UI designer, interaction designer, product manager, or design researcher. These roles typically require skills in user-centered design, prototyping tools, and collaboration with development teams to create functional and user-friendly products.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Senior Product Manager

Location

Employment

Remote - United States, Poland, or India

Full-time

U.S.-based candidates must be comfortable working regular East Coast hours. The role collaborates across regions, so some schedule flexibility is expected.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Accuris is the world's leading provider of engineering and supply chain intelligence, trusted by thousands of organizations to accelerate design, reduce risk, and keep mission-critical programs running. We're an AI-forward company, combining trusted data, domain expertise, and AI to create more proactive intelligence and connected workflows. Our Supply Chain Intelligence (SCI) suite helps engineering, procurement, compliance, and supply chain teams turn trusted electronic component data into confident decisions.

We're looking for a Senior Product Manager to help shape and grow the SCI portfolio. You'll work across Parts Intelligence, BOM Intelligence, PCN Intelligence, Parts API Integration, and Parts Content Services.

This is a senior individual-contributor role with broad influence. Your focus will shift with the highest-priority customer and business outcomes. You'll own meaningful outcomes, connect opportunities across the suite, and help strengthen how the team works through the Product Operating Model. If you love solving complex problems with designers and engineers, and you're energized by turning trusted data into meaningful outcomes, this role is for you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Translate company and product strategy into clear customer problems, business outcomes, and focused product bets, then communicate the evidence and reasoning behind key decisions.
  • Develop a deep understanding of customers, users, product data, the business, and the competitive landscape, then use those insights to shape priorities across the SCI suite.
  • Define success measures and product health metrics before solutions are built, and hold the work accountable to measurable customer and business results.
Product Discovery & Creation
  • Engage directly and continuously with sales, customers, prospects, and internal experts to understand workflows, pain points, buying behavior, and unmet needs.
  • Partner closely with product design, engineering, and data leaders to discover solutions that are valuable, usable, feasible, and viable, using prototypes and experiments to reduce risk early.
  • Use interviews, product analytics, market evidence, and commercial insight to form a point of view and adapt it as stronger evidence emerges.
  • Tackle complex product challenges involving enterprise workflows, data quality and coverage, trust, compliance, integrations, connected experiences, and the responsible application of AI.
  • Stay close to delivery so the team can learn from small, frequent releases and adjust based on evidence.
Adoption, Go-to-Market & Product Health
  • Partner with Product Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, Data, and Finance teams to align positioning, packaging, enablement, launch plans, and adoption strategies.
  • Ensure products are instrumented to show how customers use them, where they struggle, and whether new capabilities improve adoption, retention, and customer value.
  • Represent the voice of the customer while balancing business constraints across security, privacy, legal, compliance, finance, service, and go-to-market.
Team & Organizational Influence
  • Model strong product practices and raise the quality of product thinking through peer coaching, constructive challenge, strong discovery habits, and clear decision framing.
  • Build trusted relationships with product, design, engineering, data, content, and commercial partners across locations and time zones.
  • Communicate product strategy, learning, decisions, risks, and results with clarity to customers, teammates, stakeholders, and senior leaders.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Required
  • 5+ years of product management experience leading the creation of technology-powered products.
  • Demonstrated success using modern product discovery and delivery within empowered, cross-functional teams that are accountable for outcomes.
  • Proven ability to turn ambiguous problems and qualitative and quantitative evidence into focused opportunities, testable hypotheses, clear strategy, and measurable results.
  • Experience building complex B2B software, SaaS, data, intelligence, platform, or workflow products for enterprise customers.
  • Enough technical depth to work effectively with engineers and data teams on APIs, integrations, data models, product instrumentation, and platform constraints.
  • Strong business judgment, including an understanding of go-to-market, pricing and packaging, product economics, legal and compliance considerations, and stakeholder needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to influence peers, executives, customers, and commercial partners without relying on authority.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
Strongly Preferred
  • Experience working in or managing CAD, PLM or other engineering software applications.
  • Experience with electronic component intelligence, supply chain risk, sourcing, procurement, BOM management, lifecycle or obsolescence, product compliance, or manufacturing workflows.
  • Experience with enterprise data and integration products where data quality, coverage, lineage, freshness, customer trust, APIs, and PLM or ERP workflows are central to the value proposition.
  • Experience serving customers in regulated or mission-critical industries such as aerospace and defense, medical devices, automotive, energy, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Practical knowledge of generative and agentic AI, including how to identify valuable use cases, evaluate outcomes, and apply human oversight and responsible safeguards.
  • Previous experience working in a product organization that operates within the Product Operating Model, and a track record of strengthening product practices through influence and example.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with product-led growth, usage-based models, self-service enterprise experiences, or connecting platform capabilities into a coherent suite.
  • Experience with the development, GTM, and integrations of APIs.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • SCI strategy is translated into a focused set of measurable customer and business outcomes.
  • Product decisions are grounded in direct customer evidence, product data, business context, and market insight, so the team addresses value and viability risks earlier and strengthens its product craft.
  • Customers experience a more connected SCI suite, and product health, adoption, and customer value improve in measurable ways.
WHY ACCURIS - WHY NOW

Electronic component supply chains face relentless pressure from disruption, compliance demands, obsolescence, and disconnected workflows. Accuris has a strong foundation of trusted data and products used by engineering and supply chain teams around the world. The opportunity ahead is to make that intelligence more proactive, connected, and embedded in the decisions customers make every day.

You'll join at a meaningful point in our product journey as we strengthen continuous discovery, product instrumentation, outcome-based planning, and cross-functional product teams. You'll help shape both what we build and how we build it.

WHAT WE OFFER

Meaningful ownership in a remote, global team, broad product scope, and the opportunity to solve high-value problems that help organizations reduce risk, maintain compliance, and keep critical products and programs moving.
