This research often involves gathering data out in the field and networking with other industry experts. Your job duties include designing quality products, keeping up with the latest market trends, and determining cost impacts for the resources used in their designs. You may also develop new products and work to improve existing ones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer, you need strong skills in mechanical design, problem-solving, and proficiency in industry-standard CAD software, typically backed by a degree in mechanical or product design engineering. Familiarity with tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and rapid prototyping technologies, as well as knowledge of manufacturing processes, is commonly required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration set exceptional candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure innovative, manufacturable, and user-centered products that meet both technical requirements and market demands.

What are some common challenges faced by product design engineers during the product development process?

Product Design Engineers frequently encounter challenges such as balancing innovative design with manufacturability and cost constraints. They must also ensure that the product meets safety, regulatory, and usability standards, which often involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams like manufacturing, marketing, and quality assurance. Additionally, adapting to changing project requirements and tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards can be demanding. Overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and agility in managing multiple priorities.

  • Own engineering deliverables from concept refinement through detailed design, validation, and production release.
  • Build robust, manufacturable designs grounded in strong engineering principles and DFMA methodology.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings, specifications, and product documentation.
  • Run engineering analysis, tolerance assessments, risk evaluations, and trade-off studies to drive design decisions.
  • Plan, build, and test prototypes to validate performance, reliability, and user experience.
  • Partner with Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Software, Quality, and Manufacturing to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Support supplier engagement and manufacturing development to ensure successful industrialization.

  • Support product verification, validation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and share engineering best practices across teams.
What You'll Bring
You're proactive, organized, and results-driven - an engineer who takes ownership of technical challenges and thrives on collaboration. Specifically:
  • A degree in Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Design Engineering.
  • Mechanical or product design experience in a New Product Development environment.
  • Strong command of plastics, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture principles.
  • Track record taking products through multiple lifecycle stages, concept to production.
  • High proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, or comparable CAD.
  • Experience planning and executing verification and validation activities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured engineering approach.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration across global teams.
  • An appreciation for electronics, software integration, and user experience in consumer products.
  • Nice to have: experience developing consumer products or household appliances.
Why Join Us
