What does a product design engineer intern do?

A Product Design Engineer Intern assists in the development and improvement of products by working closely with engineering and design teams. Their responsibilities often include creating prototypes, conducting tests, analyzing data, and using CAD software to design components. Interns gain hands-on experience in the product development cycle, from concept to production. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet both technical requirements and user needs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a product design engineer internship?

As a Product Design Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on real-world projects such as prototyping new product concepts, conducting design validation tests, and creating technical drawings using CAD software. You may collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and manufacturing teams to refine designs and ensure they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. Interns are often involved in brainstorming sessions, user research, and iterative design reviews, providing valuable exposure to the entire product development cycle. This hands-on experience helps you develop both technical and teamwork skills, laying a strong foundation for a future career in product design engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product design engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer Intern, you generally need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD modeling, and problem-solving, typically supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, as well as prototyping tools and basic knowledge of manufacturing processes, is expected. Strong teamwork, creativity, and effective communication skills help interns contribute innovative ideas and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are essential for developing viable product solutions and gaining valuable hands-on experience in real-world design projects.

Job description

Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Burlington, MA
Compensation: $120,000 - $155,000 / year
Description
Why should you join our success story?
Based on patented technology developed at MIT, Harvard Medical School and by the Company, Myomo develops and markets the MyoProยฎ product line of lightweight, non-invasive, powered arm braces (orthoses) to restore function in paralyzed or weakened arms and hands of individuals that have suffered a stroke, spinal cord, or nerve injury. (E.g. brachial plexus injury or other neuro-muscular disabilities.) It is the only device that, sensing a patient's own neurological signals through non-invasive wearable sensors, can restore the ability to use their arms and hands so that they can live independently, increase their quality of life, reduce cost of care, and return to work. Published clinical research shows a clinically significant instantaneous reduction in upper extremity impairment with the MyoPro. Our technology has been referred by leading-edge rehabilitation facilities including Mayo Clinic, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Loma Linda Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, numerous VA Hospitals, and more. Myomo is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, with sales and clinical professionals across the U.S.
What we're looking for:
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will maintain responsibility for the design and development of powered orthotics for the MyoPro Product Line. This ideal candidate will bring a fundamental understanding of mechatronics, along with experience bringing products from early concept development through to commercialization.
He/she will understand and advocate for a usability/ user-centric design mindset, able to take in and evaluate field testing and clinical feedback. He/she does not need to have prior management experience, but possesses leadership traits, and is willing to mentor more junior engineers/ interns where there are opportunities.
Keys to success will be the ability to work effectively both collaboratively and as an individual contributor, along with strong communication skills, diligence, and attention to detail balanced with productivity-orientation.
How you'll drive impact:
  • Lead subsystem design and continual improvement of Myomo's robotic exoskeletons, enabling users to regain arm and hand function.
  • Develop detailed CAD assemblies and drawings in SolidWorks to transition early-stage concepts into manufacturable designs.
  • Interact with suppliers to obtain quotes and assess component manufacturability from a wide variety of sources, including CNC machining, sheet metal, textiles, and injection molding.
  • Collaborate with electrical & controls engineers to develop high-performance portable sensing and
    actuation systems.
  • Construct prototypes, critically evaluating performance using numerical and qualitative techniques.
  • Perform drafting, tolerancing, and DFM for low-mid volume manufacture.
  • Own mechanical and electromechanical subsystems from concept through production, balancing
    performance, cost, and reliability.
  • Mentor junior engineers as needed.

What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 5-12+ years' experience work experience or master's degree and 3+ years' industry experience.
  • Experience with electromechanical product development and manufacturing.
  • In-depth knowledge of rapid-prototyping and volume manufacturing processes including 3D printing, CNC machining, and injection molding.
  • Experience integrating actuation, sensing, control logic, and electronics in compact packages.
  • Experience with wearables, medical devices, robotics/controls, and design control a plus.
  • Excellent written/verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Comfortable in fast paced environment with ability to prioritize and adapt in a changing work environment.
  • Ability to meet deadline with specified time constraints, with flexibility to both work well independently and in a team environment.
