Job description

Job Summary
Mechanical Designer (Engineer) - As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be working closely with other designers to draft drawings in SolidWorks primarily to specifications that are detailed, accurate, and visually appealing. You will follow company SolidWorks guidelines for all processes, including naming conventions, data storage, and layout standards. The ideal candidate will have SolidWorks or engineering experience, excellent communication skills, and works well within a team environment. Responsible for creating 3D CAD models & fabrication drawings of components & assemblies in coordination with the company’s design & mechanical engineering team.

Duties & Responsibilities (routine functions):
  • Proper interpretation of design specifications, drawings, & schematics.
  • Create & maintain engineering CAD models in SolidWorks.
  • Provide engineering support by creating parts & assemblies in SolidWorks, along with detailed fabrication & installation drawings; Take given specifications and draft accurate, attractive drawings
  • Function as part of a Product Design Team following the guidance provided by senior design & project engineers; Perform design studies, tolerance stack-ups & drafting checks.
  • Coordinate with the company’s mechanical engineers for structural analysis & FEA when required; Work closely with other members of the drafting team as well as design partners to verify detail accuracy
  • Track all time spent on projects accurately
  • Maintain engineering bill of material.
Required Skills:
  • Proficient in SolidWorks with experience designing parts & assemblies & creating drawings.
  • Proficient in GD&T & various methods of tolerance analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of sheet metal design & fabrication.
  • Strong knowledge of design for CNC machining.
  • Experience in design of machinery components & systems.
  • Familiarity with motion control systems is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in computer aided drafting techniques & standard engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with engineering terminology.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office & Word Processing software.
  • Good time management skills, high work ethic.
  • Positive contributor to team participation.
  • Focused, methodical with good analytical & problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with machine shop practices & associated equipment is a plus.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities to meet target dates.
  • Able to read & comprehend instructions, short correspondence & memos.
  • Good communication skills & ability to work in teams.
Education & Experience:
  • 4 Year degree in Mechanical Engineering / Engineering Technology OR
  • 2 Year degree & 2+ years of experience in Mechanical Design OR
  • 4+ Years of experience in Mechanical Design
 
Location & Travel:
  • The position is based at Aerolab’s main facility in Jessup, MD
  • Limited offsite travel may be required
