Assistant Produce Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Produce Manager is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  • Promotes excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer focused behavior with associates. Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions and helps resolve customer issues promptly in a polite and professional manner. Focuses on continuous improvement in all areas of the department and makes changes to ensure progress.
  • Takes customer orders over the phone or in person at the store with a pleasant and positive attitude. Determines what the customer is looking for in terms of size and appearance. Creates the finished product in timely fashion.
  • Ensures fresh quality merchandise by using proper product handling techniques. Help with controlling damages and minimizing product losses according to company procedures and standards.
  • Assists Produce Manager in day-to-day functions of Produce operations such as merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement and customer service. Performs duties of Produce Manager in their absence.
  • Develops and implements merchandising plans that meet financial goals. Knowledgeable on weekly ads and specials to ensure correct pricing and production amounts. Continuously improves knowledge of produced merchandise. Adheres to and enforces company policy of production logs.
  • Oversees department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, product orders and supplies to ensure successful period-end physical inventory.
  • Assists with scheduling all department associates, participates in training, rewards and recognizes performance and delegates work assignments to effectively utilize talents and abilities while maximizing profits for the department. Utilizes the Learning Management System (LMS) for current and new associates.
  • Manages inventory levels and reviews orders to ensure product quantities meet customer demand. Maintains backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines. Oversees shelf replenishment efforts to ensure product availability for customers, with prioritization for weekly specials, seasonally and locally relevant items, and other high-velocity items. Utilizes cutting list for accuracy and variety of product.
  • Checks and verifies all department deliveries and invoices to ensure accurate billing. May help unload merchandise and transport to sales floor or storage area. Enforces and follows department practices regarding receiving, dating and restocking to ensure product rotation. Monitors product quality and freshness. Breaks down deliveries.
  • Controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, controls labor costs and reduces losses due to damages, spoiled product and shrink. Ensures associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products. Maintains freshness by properly removing and recording out of code products. Completes required product logs.
  • Keeps produce department well stocked and appealing to meet customer demands. Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions, handles special requests such as filling orders for fruit baskets and resolves customer concerns promptly in a polite and professional manner.
  • Unpacks cartons and crates of merchandise, cleans and trims produce, stocks area with new merchandise. Ensures merchandise is in saleable condition which requires rotating stock to ensure freshness. Ensures that product has been properly priced with correct signage. Maintains salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed.
  • Assists in building attractive displays. Accurately completes necessary product logs. Handles spoiled and damaged product, new items and discontinued items accordingly to company policy.
  • Maintains backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting procedures. Responsible for general sanitation in the department. Follows cleaning schedules and department guidelines to ensure that work areas, equipment, counters, display cases, etc. are well maintained, clean and meet all health and OSHA requirements. Disposes of trash properly.
  • May assist with baling cardboard or other related duties if properly trained. Training provided.
  • Ensures smooth function of department and store by cooperating with co-workers and superiors. Responsible to continuously improve job performance.
  • Responsible for utilization of all company provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE). Including but not limited to cut resistant gloves, safety cutters, company sponsored footwear, etc.
  • May also be called upon to assist in other departments.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Assists department manager in supervising all associates within the department. May also oversee the Floral department in select stores. Specific number of associates depends on store volume.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the Associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without an accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associate or bachelor's degree in business related or food service-related field desirable. Minimum (2) years' experience in management in retail/restaurant/supermarket environment.
