Job description

Clayton Services is searching for a Technical Writer to join a thriving engineering and manufacturing company in Katy, Texas. The Technical Writer will be responsible for developing professional Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (IOM) manuals by organizing engineering documentation, collaborating with technical teams, and producing polished, client-ready operating manuals for industrial process equipment.


Job Type: Temporary (possible temp-to-hire)

Pay Rate: $35.00 - $45.00/hour, depending on experience

Technical Writer Responsibilities:


  • Develop Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (IOM) manuals for industrial process equipment and packaged systems.
  • Compile, organize, and format technical information from engineering documents into professional operating manuals.
  • Review and interpret engineering documentation including P&IDs, equipment datasheets, process descriptions, control narratives, vendor manuals, and technical drawings.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and operations teams to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
  • Utilize existing company templates to prepare clear, organized, and client-ready documentation.
  • Prepare operating procedures including startup, normal operation, shutdown, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety procedures.
  • Create equipment descriptions, process summaries, operating limits, maintenance instructions, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Incorporate engineering revisions and client feedback into final documentation.
  • Maintain document formatting, revision history, and document control standards.

  • Experience preparing technical documentation for industrial equipment, manufacturing, engineering, energy, oil & gas, water treatment, automation, or related industries preferred.
  • Experience working with engineering documentation such as P&IDs, equipment manuals, process documentation, or technical specifications is highly desirable.
  • Experience creating Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (IOM) manuals or similar technical documentation is a plus.
  • Strong Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly Microsoft Word, is required.
  • Portfolio or samples of previous technical writing work are strongly preferred.
