Position Summary The CT/X-Ray Technologist performs diagnostic computed tomography and general radiographic examinations in accordance with authorized provider orders, established imaging protocols, applicable regulations, and organizational policies. The technologist provides safe, timely, and patient-centered imaging services to emergency, inpatient, and outpatient populations. Responsibilities include patient assessment and preparation, image acquisition and post-processing, radiation and contrast safety, image-quality evaluation, accurate documentation, equipment operation, and collaboration with radiologists and other members of the healthcare team. The technologist may work independently during assigned shifts and must be able to prioritize routine, urgent, and emergent imaging needs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Patient identification and preparation o Verifies patient identity using approved identifiers and confirms the imaging order, examination, and clinical indication. o Reviews relevant medical history, prior imaging, allergies, laboratory values, pregnancy status, implants, and other safety considerations as applicable. o Explains procedures to patients and families, answers questions within the technologist's scope, and obtains required acknowledgments or documentation. o Assesses the patient's physical and cognitive condition and modifies positioning or workflow when necessary to complete the examination safely. 2. Computed tomography o Performs routine, urgent, emergency, trauma, and specialized CT examinations according to approved protocols. o Selects appropriate technical factors and scan parameters based on the examination, patient condition, body habitus, and established protocol. o Performs image reconstruction, reformats, measurements, and other post-processing functions as required. o Consults the radiologist or authorized provider when an order, protocol, patient condition, or clinical indication requires clarification. 3. Diagnostic radiography o Performs general diagnostic radiographic procedures using fixed and mobile imaging equipment. o Produces properly positioned and technically acceptable images while adapting procedures for patients with limited mobility, pain, trauma, or other clinical conditions. o May perform portable, emergency department, surgical, fluoroscopic, or other radiographic procedures when trained, credentialed, and assigned. 4. Contrast and medication safety o Prepares and administers contrast media or related medications only when authorized by applicable law, organizational policy, and demonstrated competency. o Verifies required screening information before contrast administration. o Monitors patients during and after contrast administration and responds appropriately to infiltration, extravasation, allergic reaction, or other adverse events. o Maintains current knowledge of emergency procedures and the location and use of emergency equipment. 5. Image quality and quality control o Reviews images for positioning, anatomy coverage, motion, artifacts, exposure, and overall technical quality before completing the examination. o Performs repeat imaging only when clinically necessary and documents repeats in accordance with department policy. o Completes required quality-control activities and promptly reports equipment malfunctions, image-quality concerns, or safety hazards. o Participates in departmental quality-improvement and radiation-dose-reduction initiatives. 6. Radiation safety o Applies radiation-safety principles and follows the ALARA standard during CT and radiographic procedures. o Uses appropriate exposure settings, collimation, positioning, monitoring devices, and protective measures. o Protects patients, staff, visitors, and self from unnecessary radiation exposure. o Complies with departmental, regulatory, and accreditation requirements related to radiation-producing equipment. 7. Patient care and monitoring o Provides appropriate care before, during, and after imaging procedures. o Safely positions, transfers, and assists patients using approved equipment, body mechanics, and team assistance. o Recognizes changes in patient condition and initiates the appropriate clinical or emergency response. o Maintains patient privacy, dignity, comfort, and confidentiality throughout the imaging encounter. 8. Documentation and information systems o Accurately documents examinations, contrast use, medications, patient history, technical information, and other required data. o Uses the organization's electronic health record, radiology information system, PACS, voice-recognition, and image-transfer systems as assigned. o Ensures images are correctly labeled, transmitted, and available for interpretation. o Protects confidential information and follows all privacy and information-security requirements. 9. Infection prevention and workplace safety o Follows standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, sterile or aseptic practices, and equipment-cleaning procedures. o Cleans and disinfects imaging equipment and patient-care areas according to policy. o Uses required personal protective equipment and follows exposure-control procedures. o Reports injuries, exposures, safety events, and near misses through the appropriate channels. 10. Department operations o Prioritizes examinations based on patient condition, clinical urgency, department workload, and provider needs. o Coordinates imaging activities with radiologists, nurses, providers, transport staff, and other departments. o Maintains appropriate supplies and reports inventory or equipment needs. o Supports efficient patient flow and communicates delays or operational barriers. o Participates in orientation, competency validation, continuing education, and training of students or employees when assigned. o Provides coverage during evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call periods, or emergency operations as required by the position. o Performs other duties consistent with the role and the employee's training, licensure, and demonstrated competency. Minimum Qualifications โ€ข Graduate of an accredited radiologic technology program. โ€ข Current certification and registration in Radiography through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, or another credential accepted by the organization and applicable regulatory authority. โ€ข Current radiologic technologist license in the state where services are performed, when required. โ€ข Current Basic Life Support or CPR certification from an organization-approved provider. โ€ข Documented CT education, clinical training, experience, or competency. โ€ข Ability to meet the organization's competency requirements for both CT and diagnostic radiography. โ€ข Ability to obtain CT certification within the timeframe established by organizational policy when certification is not required at hire. โ€ข Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to the extent necessary to perform essential job responsibilities. Preferred Qualifications โ€ข Current ARRT certification and registration in Computed Tomography, ARRT(CT). โ€ข At least one year of recent CT or diagnostic radiography experience. โ€ข Experience in an acute-care hospital, emergency department, trauma setting, or high-volume imaging department. โ€ข Experience with intravenous access, power injectors, contrast administration, mobile radiography, and emergency imaging. โ€ข Experience working independently during evening, night, weekend, or limited-staffing shifts. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities โ€ข Knowledge of radiographic positioning, cross-sectional anatomy, pathology, radiation physics, CT protocols, and image reconstruction. โ€ข Knowledge of radiation protection, contrast safety, infection prevention, and emergency-response procedures. โ€ข Ability to operate CT scanners, radiographic equipment, power injectors, patient-monitoring devices, and related accessories. โ€ข Ability to evaluate image quality and identify technical problems without independently interpreting or diagnosing the examination. โ€ข Ability to prioritize multiple examinations and respond effectively to changing clinical conditions. โ€ข Ability to work independently while recognizing when consultation or escalation is required. โ€ข Strong interpersonal, patient-care, teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. โ€ข Ability to remain calm and organized during emergencies, trauma cases, equipment failures, or high-volume periods. Physical Requirements The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, positioning, and movement throughout the imaging department and patient-care areas. The technologist must be able to assist with patient transfers and positioning and to push, pull, or maneuver wheelchairs, stretchers, mobile imaging equipment, and related devices. Appropriate lifting equipment, transfer devices, and team assistance must be used in accordance with organizational policy. The employee must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and radiation-monitoring devices.
