What does a process technician do in a refinery?

A Process Technician in a refinery is responsible for monitoring and controlling the equipment and systems that convert raw materials like crude oil into finished products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. They operate machinery, adjust process variables, perform routine maintenance, and troubleshoot issues to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. Process Technicians also collect samples, conduct quality checks, and follow strict safety and environmental regulations to minimize risks. Their role is crucial in maintaining product quality and optimizing production processes within the refinery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process technician in a refinery?

To thrive as a Process Technician in a refinery, you need a solid background in chemical or mechanical processes, safety protocols, and typically a relevant technical diploma or associate degree. Familiarity with distributed control systems (DCS), process simulation software, and standard operating procedures is essential, along with certifications like OSHA safety training. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations in complex and potentially hazardous refinery environments.

What are some common challenges process technicians face when working in a refinery environment?

Process Technicians in refineries often encounter challenges such as operating and troubleshooting complex machinery under strict safety and environmental regulations. They must quickly identify and resolve process upsets while maintaining communication with control room operators and other team members. Additionally, adapting to rotating shifts and responding to emergency situations require resilience and strong teamwork skills. Staying current with evolving technology and procedures is also essential for long-term success in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Process Technician Refinery vs Process Operator?

AspectProcess Technician RefineryProcess Operator

Work EnvironmentRefinery plants, involving monitoring and maintaining refining processesRefinery or chemical plants, focusing on operating equipment and systems
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in oil and gas refining industryUsed across oil, gas, and chemical manufacturing industries
Job FocusMaintaining process efficiency, troubleshooting, and quality controlOperating equipment, adjusting controls, and ensuring safety protocols

Both roles are vital in refinery operations, often requiring similar technical skills and certifications. While Process Technicians focus more on maintaining and troubleshooting processes, Process Operators primarily operate and control equipment. Understanding these distinctions helps job seekers identify the right career path within the refining industry.

Where do process technicians make the most money?

Process technicians in the refining industry tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a strong presence of large refineries and petrochemical plants, such as areas with significant energy infrastructure. Factors like experience, certifications, and working in hazardous or high-demand environments can also increase earning potential. Generally, locations with a high concentration of industrial facilities offer the best compensation for process technicians.

Mechanical Process Technician

Full-time Regular Savannah, GA, US

30+ days ago Requisition ID: 1329

Build a Long-Term Career in Food-Grade Manufacturing

At Fuji Vegetable Oil, Inc., this is not a traditional production role—and it’s not just pushing buttons.

We are looking for a hands-on Utility Technician / Processing Technician who is mechanically inclined, enjoys troubleshooting, and takes ownership of keeping operations running smoothly.

In this role, you will walk the process, work directly with equipment, troubleshoot issues in real-time, and support the physical operation of the plant—from pressing filters to maintaining flow through our systems.

We refine high-quality, food-grade vegetable oil used in premium chocolate and confectionery products worldwide. Our environment is safety-driven, GMP-compliant, and highly process-focused, where attention to detail and consistency matter.

If you’re someone who likes to stay moving, solve problems, and work with your hands, this is the role for you.

Why Join Fuji Vegetable Oil?

We invest in our people and reward long-term commitment.

Our Benefits Include:

  • 401(k) with 12.5% Company Contribution
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance (Day One Eligibility)
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and Paid Holidays
  • Life Insurance, Short-Term & Long-Term Disability
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Boot Vouchers, Required PPE, and Uniforms Provided
  • Dependent Coverage for Spouses and Children (Under Age 26)
Position Summary – Mechanical Process Technician

The Processing Technician (Utility Tech) plays a critical, hands-on role in running and maintaining the process within our CBE (Cocoa Butter Equivalent) operation.

This is a field-based role—not a control room-only position—requiring you to:

  • Walk the line and monitor live processes
  • Physically interact with equipment and systems
  • Troubleshoot and correct process disruptions
  • Maintain cleanliness and food safety standards in a GMP environment

Every day can vary based on production needs, making this a great fit for someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and staying engaged.

  • Walk the production line to monitor flow, equipment, and system performance
  • Troubleshoot process issues in real time (flow issues, pressure, temperature, blockages, etc.)
  • Operate and maintain equipment, including pumps, valves, and piping systems
  • Press and change industrial filters, including hands-on filter breakdown and rebuild
  • Perform basic mechanical work and minor repairs using hand tools
  • Assist maintenance with equipment issues and communicate system needs
  • Operate computerized systems to support processing, but remain actively engaged in the field
  • Sample, test, and monitor product quality (temps, specs, consistency)
  • Blend, transfer, and route oils through process systems
  • Maintain GMP cleanliness standards, including routine cleaning of equipment and work areas
  • Support washdowns, sanitation, and spill cleanup as needed
  • Prepare equipment for startup, shutdown, and changeovers
  • Operate forklifts and material handling equipment
  • Work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including elevated areas
  • Participate in safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
What We’re Looking For

We are specifically seeking someone who is:

  • Mechanically inclined and comfortable using basic tools (wrenches, etc.)
  • A troubleshooter who can identify and resolve issues—not just report them
  • Comfortable working on their feet, moving throughout the plant, and staying hands-on
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and food safety (GMP)
  • Self-motivated and able to take initiative without constant direction
  • Interested in long-term growth within a stable manufacturing environment
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 6+ months of industrial, mechanical, or manufacturing experience preferred
  • Experience in process operations, maintenance support, utilities, or production troubleshooting is a strong plus

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to read measurements (tape measure, gauges, etc.)
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort with tools
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and operating instructions
  • Effective communication (verbal and radio)
  • Basic math skills (fractions, decimals, conversions)
Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on role requiring the ability to:

  • Stand, walk, climb, and move throughout the plant for extended periods
  • Work at heights (up to 60 feet)
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Work in confined spaces (with proper clearance)
  • Perform repetitive physical tasks, including cleaning and equipment handling
  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work
  • Exposure to heat, steam, oils, and industrial equipment
  • GMP environment requiring cleanliness and sanitation standards
  • Loud environment (hearing protection provided)
What Success Looks Like in This Role

Successful candidates typically come from backgrounds such as:

  • Utility Technician / Boiler / Process Operator
  • Maintenance Technician or Mechanically Inclined Production Tech
  • Industrial manufacturing with hands-on troubleshooting experience
  • Experience working with pumps, valves, filters, conveyors, or process systems

They are known for:

  • Taking initiative
  • Being reliable and consistent
  • Solving problems without waiting to be told
  • Wanting a long-term career—not just a job
