Basic Function
A one semester program designed for students in their last semester of Process Technology instruction. The LYB Apprenticeship consists of a minimum of 300 hours at an LYB facility. This position is responsible for the monitoring and operation of plant process equipment used in the manufacturing process. The apprentice will train with, and support, process technicians while participating as a contributing member of the operations team. This position receives direction from a production supervisor and support from the process specialist, maintenance and technical personnel. LYB completes an end of term evaluation and submits to the college and successful students receive college credit hours.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Responsible for personal safety, the safety of co-workers and promoting a safe work environment; responsible for carrying out all work activities in compliance with state and federal environmental regulations.
2. Performs their duties in adherence with LYB procedures, standards, and specifications.
3. Making rounds and assisting with taking readings
4. Monitoring and maintaining day-to-day unit operations
5. Learn about health, safety and environmental hazards
6. Witness the work permit system
7. Engage in frequent developmental dialog with supervisor and others to continually enhance personal and group performance and development.
8. Train in area of assignment
Academic Prerequisites and Qualification Requirements
Successful candidates for this position must possess all of the following:
1. Students must maintain an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale to participate in the Apprenticeship Program.
2. Completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours of relevant technology coursework
3. Must register for the internship college course at their home college
4. High School diploma or GED.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
1. Must be willing and able to work outside, year round under various weather conditions. LyondellBasell's chemicals plants and refinery are 24-hour, 365 days per year operations.
2. Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts (which may include nights, weekends and some holidays) and provide overtime coverage.
3. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, work in confined space and work at heights of 300 ft. or more. vessels, etc.)
4. Ability to perform walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, twisting, and lifting a minimum 55 lbs.
5. Able and willing to wear appropriate protective equipment including respiratory fit testing.
6. Basic computer skills are a requirement for this position.
7. Must possess or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to first day of employment.
8. Must successfully pass pre-employment screening process.
9. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without visa sponsorship (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident)
