How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible and accountable for the systems, tools and their application to assess and mitigate the process hazards within the business. This role supports the business objective to safely manufacture existing and new molecules in order to delight our customers, through the process safety coordination with Engineering, Operations, HSE, R&D, product development and product management.

The role is to demonstrate leadership, initiative, solution implementation, process safety application, knowledge and skills in a fast paced and very dynamic environment, in order to find the best solutions for operating safely. The role supports the implementation of the process safety programs through its geography and leads the process risk assessment required by the projects and changes. It ensures that the selected risk reduction measures and the related strategy meets the criteria for safe operations. The role acts beyond its geography to provide additional experience and resources when needed.

Job Responsibilities:

For her/his geography:

  • Facilitate the process safety program across the geography (APAC or US) and take the necessary initiative with the local stakeholders to overcome implementation challenges;
  • Ensure that all the process safety assessments are performed in accordance with the ALAM standards and that the changes are properly assessed;
  • Support, coach, and share excellent practices with the other process safety engineers;
  • Propose enhancement of the current process safety methods and standards.

For her/his group of products as first contact and when assigned for his/her secondary groups of products:

  • Works with the stage gate process in new project development to ensure analyses are complete and requirements are met;
  • Forms effective partnerships with other organizations and functions to align on shared process safety strategies and goals;
  • Guides the elaboration of the annual process risk management plan;
  • Guides the process risk assessment required by the projects and changes required, and proposes ways to advance process safety when deemed necessary;
  • Makes informed choices with a view towards what is most effective for Air Liquide Advanced Materials while seeking win/win outcomes;
  • Propose and implement improvements for the process safety methodologies and tools;
  • Participates in root cause investigations and follow up actions;
  • Works within AL Corporate entity and other affiliates to leverage improvements and learnings;
  • Performs computer chemical dispersion modeling;
  • Supports MOC preparation and reviews MOCs as a subject matter expert;
  • Makes data-based choices. Is methodical in the analysis;
  • Collaborates to resolve gaps between performance and assessments;
  • Trains employees to elevate the process safety culture within the company.
  • Monitors the efficiency of the process risk management processes.
  • Performs reviews in the field to confirm the efficiency of the validated risk reduction measures and the application and efficiency of the assessment methods.
  • Facilitates or participates in root cause analysis (RCA) related to process safety risks, in close relation with the site HSES manager.
  • Travels to other Air Liquide Advanced Materials sites, as required to support the team

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science or Technical discipline.
  • We are looking for roughly 10+ years of experience in the operations field or in process engineering within a chemical industry, ideally including at least 6 years focused on process safety.
  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals.
  • Deep knowledge of Process Safety methodologies and tools like Loss Prevention, LOPA, HAZOP, PHA, QRA.
  • Knowledge in PSM regulations.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Collaborative professional with the ability to perform well under evolving priorities.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively in written and verbal formats with stakeholders at multiple levels in the business.
  • Ability to work and travel globally.
  • Ability to learn technical chemical processes quickly in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with toxic, flammable, pyrophoric, chemicals.
  • Root cause investigation and analysis skills.
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification or equivalent knowledge.
  • Process Control experience.
  • Experience working in dynamic environments of short time to market and high customer expectations.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, empowered organization.
