What is a Process Piping Engineer?

A Process Piping Engineer is a specialized engineer responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the installation of piping systems used to transport fluids and gases in industrial settings such as chemical plants, refineries, and power plants. They ensure that piping systems meet safety, code, and operational requirements, considering factors like pressure, temperature, material compatibility, and flow rates. Process Piping Engineers work closely with other engineering disciplines to integrate piping systems into overall plant designs, and often use software tools for stress analysis and 3D modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Piping Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Piping Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, knowledge of piping design codes (such as ASME), and experience with process systems. Familiarity with CAD software (like AutoCAD or SmartPlant), pipe stress analysis tools, and relevant engineering certifications (such as PE licensure) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant piping system designs in complex industrial projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Process Piping Engineers in project execution?

Process Piping Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with industry codes and safety standards. They must carefully balance design efficiency with cost-effectiveness, while also addressing unexpected site conditions or changes in project scope. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these obstacles and delivering successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Process Piping Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProcess Piping EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical/Civil Engineering, piping certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentOil & gas, chemical plants, refineriesManufacturing, HVAC, automotive industries
Industry UsageDesign and oversee piping systems for process plantsDesign and analyze mechanical systems across industries

Process Piping Engineers focus specifically on designing, installing, and maintaining piping systems in process industries like oil, gas, and chemicals. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on various mechanical systems across multiple sectors. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, Process Piping Engineers specialize in piping systems within process plants, making their expertise more industry-specific.

Just an hour from world-class attractions like Disney World and Universal Studios, Melbourne offers the perfect balance of career growth, family life, and fun, all in a warm subtropical climate with a relaxed, suburban feel.

Overview

We're looking for a Senior Semiconductor Process Piping Engineer to join our team in either our Melbourne, FL or Tempe, AZ office. Melbourne is located on Florida's Space Coast, home to NASA's Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and offers beautiful beaches, quaint downtown shopping, dining and nightlife, and A-rated schools. Tempe is part of the Greater Phoenix metro area and offers a vibrant mix of dining, entertainment, outdoor recreation, and access to one of the nation's fastest-growing technology and semiconductor hubs.

BRPH is a technically focused, creative architecture, design, engineering, construction services, and mission solutions firm providing innovative solutions to mission-driven clients in the aerospace, defense, education, manufacturing, commercial, entertainment, and hospitality market sectors. Founded in 1964, BRPH is consistently ranked among the nation's top firms and has completed a wide range of projects across the United States and throughout the world.

As a Senior Semiconductor Process Piping Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of piping systems for semiconductor manufacturing and support facilities. This includes (but is not limited to) engineering, sizing, and specification of semiconductor process and utility distribution systems and components such as gas cabinets, valve manifold boxes and panels (VMBs and VMPs), valve panels at tools, automatic and manual changeovers, pressure control stations, regulators, mass flow controllers, control valves, filters and purifiers, vacuum distribution interfaces, pumps, heat exchangers, vaporizers, dryers, separators, knockout tanks, accumulators, surge bottles, pressure relief devices, purge and vent systems, abatement interfaces, distribution headers and manifolds, and tie-ins to vendor skids. It also includes selecting instrumentation and controls such as pressure, temperature, flow, and level instruments, transmitters and switches, gauges, analyzers, leak detection, valve positioners, alarms, and shutdown and interlock devices, and documenting these selections on PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, and drawings.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to translate Owner requirements into design reality and communicate the design through engineering drawings and specifications while following all pertinent codes, client standards, and regulations. Critical thinking and analytical skills are a must. Teamwork and coordination with other disciplines is essential to a complete design. This position also values candidates who have experience building and maintaining client relationships, leading technical discussions, supporting pursuits, and serving as a trusted interface with owners and stakeholders.

On a typical day, you will work in CAD programs such as Revit and Inventor for 3D design. AFT Arrow and AFT Fathom are often used for analysis, along with hand calculations. You will also support budget performance, manage team hours, work closely with Project Managers, and serve as the technical interface with clients, leading page turns, design reviews, and participating in client meetings. You will be expected to provide project management and engineering leadership for semiconductor piping design efforts and drive projects to successful delivery.

If you're interested in this role but don't meet every preferred qualification, we still want to hear from you. We value relevant experience, strong fundamentals, and a willingness to learn. If you're looking to take your career to the next level, work with a talented team of professionals who love what they do, enjoy a flexible work schedule, and share in the profits of our 100 percent employee-owned firm, BRPH might be a great fit for you.
