Job Title: Operator-Hydrovac
Department: Municipal- Mobile
Reports to: Branch Manager
Status: Non-Exempt
Summary of Position: The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydrovac trucks to excavate and expose underground utilities. This position involves driving, operating equipment, performing routine maintenance, completing documentation, and ensuring safety compliance on various job sites. Operators work closely with team members, clients, and supervisors to ensure projects are completed safely and professionally.
Essential Functions:
  • Operate hydrovac trucks to perform excavation using high-pressure water and vacuum systems.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and maintain accurate driver logs and field tickets.
  • Safely expose underground utilities and perform trenching and other digging activities.
  • Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and utility locates.
  • Coordinate with project managers, supervisors, and crew members on daily tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operability of trucks and equipment.
  • Set up safe work zones and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Fuel, grease, and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Communicate with clients and team members in a professional manner.
  • Travel to various job sites as required, including out-of-town or out-of-state locations.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: (these are required to enable job holders to perform the jobโ€™s essential functions).
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, including Occupational Health amp; Safety Act, D.O.T. regulations, and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to operate in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
  • Understanding of utility locate procedures and ability to interpret markings.
  • Skill in safely managing construction materials, tools, and small machinery.
  • Capacity to lead crew members, train subordinates, and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Physical ability to perform labor-intensive tasks, including lifting, bending, and working long hours.
  • Must complete all required safety-related training, including, but not limited to, TWIC, 10 Hour OSHA, Confined Space, Confined Space Entry, Breathing Air Equipment Training and Fit Test, Aerial Lift Training, Lock Out Tag Out, Heat Stress, MSHA, Defensive Driving, Hazard Communications, and H2S.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Minimum 1โ€“2 years of experience in hydrovac or related construction field.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a means of communication.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug and alcohol test, background, and motor vehicle check.
Specific Licenses: Minimum of a Valid Class B Commercial driverโ€™s license with Air brakes and tanker endorsement.
Work conditions: Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions (Heat, cold, rain, etc.). Exposure to noise, dust, heavy machinery, and Underground utilities. May require travel and extended work hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays. Frequent physical activity including standing, walking, climbing, lifting, and kneeling.
Physical Conditions: Ability to lift 50 or more pounds regularly, work in confined spaces and at heights. Ability to handle tools and operate controls, visual and auditory ability to detect signals, hazards, and communications.
