General Purpose
The City of Doral Unpaid Internship Program provides students in colleges and universities, and/or interested individuals, the opportunity to meet the City's leadership and get a first-hand look at local government.
The City of Doral will benefit from your skills, talents, and new ideas. With your help, programs and services will be able to expand and reach additional members of our community. Unpaid Internship times are flexible, and the individual can choose to participate in short-term service events, special projects, community projects, or pledge long-term commitments.
Supervision Received and Exercised
The work schedule is coordinated based on the intern's schedule and the needs of the City. The City's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Practical hands-on knowledge and experience in dealing with the many aspects and complex relationships that are essential in producing and implementing a multitude of diverse community services.

  • Prepares reports using specialized programs and basic computer programs such as Microsoft office suite.
  • Responsible for filing documents and performing data entry and maintaining departmental records and forms.
  • Responsible for assisting with the planning, set up, and cleanup process in City sponsored events.
  • Provides assistance to City employees and vendors to ensure completion with assigned project.
  • Assist with special projects and special events throughout the City of Doral.
  • Provide administrative assistance to Executive Aide for Councilmember, Chief of Staff, or Councilmember.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Program Terms:
  • The duration of the assignment typically ranges from eight (8) to twenty-six (26) weeks.
  • Hours per week shall not exceed twenty-eight hours (28) a week.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D required.
  • Must be a student actively enrolled in a college or university with a G.P.A of 3.0 or higher.
  • Possession of a valid, State of Florida driver's license to operate the motor vehicle operated, typically Class E OR a valid State of Florida Government Identification Card is required.
  • Requirements exist at the time of application and as a condition of continued completion of the internship programs.
  • Applicants must complete all requirements established by the City of Doral for interns. This may include, but is not limited to, a written examination, a comprehensive background investigation, and a job-related medical examination including a drug/alcohol screening test.
  • Must be a non-smoker.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  • Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
  • Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to use computer for data entry and word processing.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perceive sound at normal speaking levels with assistance if necessary; express ideas through speaking accurately/loudly/quickly; use visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal or determining the accuracy of work; and walk from one work site to another.
  • Ability to make rational decisions and perform activities such as transcribing, viewing a computer terminal and/or extensive reading.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

Important Information:
This position is regularly scheduled to work 28 or less hours per week. Part-time employees do not qualify for benefits. Provisional and acting employees do not qualify for benefits unless they are already existing full-time City employees.
In compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a part time employee shall become eligible for health benefits only, if they have an average of at least 130 hours of service per month during the initial measurement period or standard measurement period.
All employees of the City are eligible to participate in the City's 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.
