Job description

Industrial Engineer - Business Process Excellence
(Detroit, MI) Make plant more productive and efficient by leading the design and implementation of new or improved technologies, systems, and processes. Coordinate the packaging for all DMS internal products, oversee and approve the supplier responsible packaging, and work directly with the customer to ensure the customer supplied end item packaging meets the needs of DMS and the customer.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles and methods to develop efficient material handling processes for the movement of material throughout manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop and maintain material handling data to include bill of material, packaging information, and material flow/material handling information.
  • Analyze dock operations and locations for all material being received into the plant, as well as finished product being shipped and returnable containers being reintroduced into the supply chain.
  • Plan for efficient material movement processes and patterns within the plant, which may include movement of material by fork truck, tugger, conveyor, and automatic guided vehicle systems. Material delivery methods may also include sequencing and kitting. Experience with Factory FLOW software is a plus.
  • Develop storage analysis to determine min and max storage levels for parts being stored within the plant, both in bulk and small lot form. Analysis will also include requirements for empty returnable containers. Develop efficient storage layouts that maximize floor space utilization while also supporting efficient material flow within the facility.
  • Using AutoCAD to (a) develop workstation layouts designed to maximize the efficiency of operators and (b) drafting orthographic projection of packaging and optimization of floor space.
  • Develop specifications to assist in the procurement of material handling equipment, including dock equipment, storage equipment, powered material handling vehicles, and standard and specialized line display equipment. Assist in the buyoff and runoff of equipment. Maintain the overall material handling equipment budget.
  • Use Pro-Model Simulation Software to plan, design, and improve new or existing manufacturing, logistics, and packaging.
  • Incorporate ergonomics in the design and approval of DMS, Supplier, and Customer packaging consisting of (a) Gravity Flow Racking, WIP Packaging, End Item Packaging.
  • Incorporate MOST (Maynard Operation Sequence Technique) analysis as the primary time study methodology to optimize the manufacturing and logistical processes.
  • Manage the relationships with DMS cross functional teams, suppliers, and the customer to develop the optimum solutions that meets the needs of all parties.
  • Update the Ford Motor Covisint System (Ford's Packaging Portal) for new programs and to provide feedback to Ford and receive feedback from Ford.
  • Coordinate the repair of Customer End Item Racks by working closely with DMS Operations, DMS PC&L, Ford Packaging, and Ford selected repair suppliers.
  • Monitor the End Item Fleet by program and request Fleet Calculator Assessments with the customer when required.
  • Coordinate packaging information for new program quotes including business won and business pursued.

Minimum of a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering and 6 months of experience as a Business Process Excellence Intern or Industrial Engineering Intern in an automotive manufacturing environment required. Experience with analysis and report generation using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, Factory FLOW software and Pro-Model Simulation Software required.
