What does a process modeling engineer do?

A Process Modeling Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing processes within industries such as manufacturing, chemical production, or energy. They use mathematical models and simulation software to predict how processes will perform under various conditions. By creating digital models, they help improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure safety and quality standards are met. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers and stakeholders to implement improvements based on data-driven insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a process modeling engineer?

To thrive as a Process Modeling Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, analytical problem-solving skills, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB, and understanding of industry standards are crucial for effective modeling and analysis. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and convey complex technical information. These skills ensure accurate process optimization, efficient project execution, and drive operational improvements in manufacturing or industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by process modeling engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Process Modeling Engineers often work closely with teams from operations, R&D, and IT to develop and refine models that optimize manufacturing or chemical processes. A common challenge is translating complex technical data into actionable insights that are easily understood by non-engineering stakeholders. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as project requirements can evolve rapidly and may require balancing competing priorities. Building strong relationships and maintaining open channels for feedback help ensure that process models align with both technical standards and business goals.

What is the difference between Process Modeling Engineer vs Process Improvement Specialist?

AspectProcess Modeling EngineerProcess Improvement Specialist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field; proficiency in process modeling softwareBachelor's in Engineering, Business, or related field; certifications like Six Sigma often preferred
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, manufacturing plants, or R&D labsOperational teams, manufacturing facilities, or corporate offices
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectorsManufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and service industries

The Process Modeling Engineer focuses on creating detailed process models using specialized software to optimize workflows. In contrast, the Process Improvement Specialist concentrates on analyzing existing processes and implementing improvements, often utilizing methodologies like Six Sigma. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in their primary focus and tools used.

Job description

The Company
The energy industry is entering one of the most significant periods of growth and transformation in its history. Meeting the nation's growing demand for reliable electricity will require new ideas, new infrastructure, and talented people committed to building for the future.
At Cypress Creek Energy, we're meeting that challenge by developing and operating the energy infrastructure needed to power communities, support economic opportunity, and strengthen resilience. We believe our responsibility extends beyond the grid and that how we build matters just as much as what we build.
That same commitment extends to our employees. We invest in professional growth, encourage collaboration across teams, and provide opportunities to take ownership, expand your expertise, and advance your career. Our culture is grounded in safety, accountability, respect, and a shared commitment to deliver results. Join us and help meet one of the most important energy challenges of our time while building a rewarding career.
Overview
CCE is seeking an Engineer, HV Engineering to serve as a lead technical authority on generation and load interconnection engineering, substation design, and utility compliance. This role sits at the intersection of substation design and project execution. You'll proved hands-on technical guidance that shapes how CCE designs, builds, and commissions utility-scale solar, storage, and co-located large load facilities across our national portfolio.
This is an individual contributor and cross-functional role reporting to the Senior Manager of HV Engineering.
Responsibilities
Interconnection Engineering, Engineering Management, & Technical Support
  • Provide technical engineering support for interconnection requests on both generation and load projects, including initial queue submissions, material modifications, and as-built updates.
  • Review internal site plans and single line diagrams (SLDs) for physical interconnection feasibility and utility compliance, including Point of Interconnection (POI) substation expansion configurations.
  • Review ISO/RTO interconnection studies including System Impact Studies (SIS), Facilities Studies, and short circuit studies to validate assumptions, identify cost drivers, and flag technical concerns on behalf of CCE project teams.
  • Manage external engineering consultants and technical parties to create deliverables and studies necessary for project execution.

EPC & Design Package Support
  • Support EPC procurement processes including preparation and review of RFPs for substation and interconnection scope.
  • Respond to EPC technical RFI's, ensuring alignment with overall project design, company standards and value engineering.
  • Review EPC-submitted design packages and engineering studies for technical accuracy, utility compliance, and alignment with internal company standards. This includes reviewing substation and project level electrical, P&C, and physical designs.

Substation Major Equipment Technical Strategy
  • Develop and review Owner-Furnished Equipment (OFE) datasheets and technical specifications to ensure compliance with utility standards and project requirements. OFE typically includes substation main power transformers and HV circuit breakers.
  • Review of OEM equipment drawings and factory test reports for major substation equipment across CCE's project portfolio.

Utility Technical Oversight & Construction Support
  • Lead technical interconnection oversight with utilities and transmission owners throughout the project lifecycle, serving as CCE's primary engineering point of contact on HV and utility engineering matters.
  • Provide high voltage and utility engineering support during construction, commissioning, and energization activities. This includes coordinating with utility on project back-feed and providing guidance to internal PM's on testing and commissioning activities.

Education & Experience Required
  • 5-8 years of power systems or transmission engineering experience in a utility, generation developer, EPC, or consulting engineering environment.
  • Working knowledge of utility substation design, HV equipment specifications, and interconnection study processes across multiple ISOs/RTOs and utilities.
  • Preference for candidates with steady-state and dynamic modeling tools (PSS/E, PowerWorld, ETAP, or equivalent) as well as experience reviewing wide area screening analyses.
  • Experience reviewing substation design (physical/P&C) packages and commissioning documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize across multiple simultaneous workstreams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical findings clearly to non-technical and commercial audiences.
  • Embrace and live by the mission and values of Cypress Creek Energy

Location: Preference for one of CCE's offices (Asheville, NC; Durham, NC; New York, NY; or San Francisco, CA) on a hybrid schedule (3 days/week in office). Remote candidates will also be considered.
Compensation: The salary range for the position is $110-160K plus bonus and benefits. Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location.
Benefits:
  • 15 days of Paid Time Off, accrual up to 20 days, 11 observed holidays.
  • 401(k) Match
  • Comprehensive package including medical, dental, vision and health insurance
  • Wellness stipend, family planning stipend, and generous parental leave
