What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and sometimes PE certification. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), and Six Sigma methodologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive process improvements. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing production, ensuring safety, and achieving operational efficiency in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer might face when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing workflows. Additionally, they must balance cost constraints with the need for efficiency and quality improvements. Coordinating across departments—such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance—can present communication challenges, requiring strong collaboration skills. Successful Process Engineers address these issues by engaging stakeholders early, clearly communicating the benefits of changes, and using data-driven approaches to demonstrate positive outcomes.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, control, and optimize industrial processes, often within manufacturing or chemical plants. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and quality by analyzing workflows and modifying equipment or systems. Process Engineers commonly collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions that enhance production. Their work is critical for ensuring that operations run smoothly, cost-effectively, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Job description

As a Senior Process Engineer with the Supply Chain team, you will develop, implement, and maintain fair, reasonable, and attainable engineered labor standards across Distribution Center operations. They observe DC workflows to define optimal processes and preferred methods, then document via clear and effective SOPs. Senior Engineers conduct time studies to measure and validate direct labor functions, analyze data, and communicate findings and process recommendations to Operations leadership. In support of incentive and accountability programs, they evaluate labor reporting and employee performance to ensure accurate and consistent standards application. Senior Engineers educate DC Operations teams to promote understanding, alignment, and sustained adoption of labor standards. They collaborate closely with DC Operations and cross-functional partners to identify improvement opportunities, develop operational strategies, and resolve process and/or training gaps. Additionally, they assess DC capacity requirements and constraints and, when needed, provide innovative, data-driven network optimization recommendations. Approximately 50% travel required to DCs.
This role is on site, which means you would be required to work on site at the Best Buy location listed on the job posting. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.
What you'll do

  • Educate & Coach: Train DC Operations "what is" and "how to leverage" engineered labor standards, including methods observations, providing feedback, incentive and accountability impacts, etc.
  • Tools & Software: Maintain accuracy of DC layouts including XYZ coordinates via AutoCAD and WMS. Maintenance of ELS flowcharts and standard data via StandardsPro or other software solution. Time studies, work samples, and data captured via UMT plus.
  • Capacity Planning: Analyze DC network capacity needs and provide recommendations collaborating with DC Operations teams. Utilize data-driven approaches to model facility operations, forecast capacity, and simulate process changes to provide innovative solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Observe and improve warehouse processes and workflows to enhance throughput, reduce costs, and improve service levels. Provide recommendations to create or improve operational policies, procedures or systems.
  • Reporting: Utilize reporting such as SCI, Red Prairie, and Power BI Dashboards to identify opportunities in direct labor performance and utilization. Work cross-functionally to improve DC Operations metrics.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or any Quantitive Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience
  • 4+ years in external Supply Chain engineering roles involving process improvement, layout optimization, and/or engineered labor standards
  • 2+ years of experience working with engineered labor standards and time study methods.
  • Proficiency in Lean Six Sigma concepts and tools.
Preferred Requirements
  • 5+ years in external Supply Chain engineering roles involving process improvement, layout optimization, and/or engineered labor standards
  • Advanced analytics tools such as Excel, SQL, etc.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, LMS/WMS, SQL, Time study software such as UMT Plus, StandardsPro, Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Proven track record developing and/or maintaining engineered labor standards with extensive experience conducting time studies in a distribution environment.
  • Experience with warehouse automation (e.g., conveyors, AS/RS, robotics)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under tight deadlines
