Job description

Senior Process Engineer

Purpose of the Job: The Senior Process Engineer will identify, recommend, and implement strategic projects to improve quality, capacity, yield, energy consumption, and process safety performance. The individual will lead process design activities and collaborate with operations, project engineering, and unit specialists to develop and implement capital projects from concept through startup, including FEED, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup support.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • SHE (Safety, Health, Environment)
    • Maintain and control the safe and efficient operation of the production unit using established operating disciplines and procedures.
    • Ensure safety and environmental compliance is achieved.
    • Maintain plant assets and protective systems integrity.
    • Define and maintain correct operating envelopes; investigate deviations.
    • Participate in the development of operating procedures and training materials.
    • Provide leadership in PSM and Environmental efforts, including PHAs, MOC, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
    • Conduct PSSRs for MOCs and approve MOCs.
    • Investigate SHE incidents; collect and report near misses.
    • Maintain safety as the highest priority, follow the 20 Principles of Safety, conduct routine AS‑Care tours, and participate in audits.
  • Manufacturing Excellence
    • Develop systems to improve and sustain value in health, safety, environment, production rates, reliability, cost, and quality.
    • Troubleshoot and problem‑solve advanced process problems.
    • Develop recommendations to improve unit performance and manage key performance indicators for plant performance.
    • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize operating units.
    • Lead process design activities for capital and expense projects, including development of process design packages, simulations, balances, equipment sizing, PFDs, P&IDs, process datasheets, design basis documents, and engineering contractor reviews.
    • Balance day‑to‑day operational priorities with long‑term strategic objectives.
    • Coach less experienced engineers and provide technical training.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
    • BS in Chemical Engineering or related field.
    • 10+ years of process engineering experience in the chemical, petrochemical, refining, or related process industries.
    • Demonstrated process design experience; production support experience alone is not sufficient.
  • Technical Skills
    • Process modeling using Aspen software; heat and material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, process calculations, hydraulic analyses, and equipment sizing.
    • Experience supporting FEED, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup.
    • Experience reviewing EPC contractor process deliverables.
    • Knowledge of relief systems, PSV sizing, distillation column operations, PSM, hydraulics, and process troubleshooting.
    • Strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Office.

  • ADA / Physical Requirements
    • Visual acuity for written documents and computer screens.
    • Work in varying environmental conditions: extreme cold (<32°F), extreme heat (>100°F), high noise, and exposure to chemicals, fumes, dusts, or mists.
    • Must be able to exert up to 20lb of force occasionally and 10lb frequently, and may need to lift, carry, or work near moving mechanical parts.
