How much do process control engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for process control engineering in the United States is $98,759.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much do control engineers get paid?

Control engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in industries like manufacturing, oil and gas, or automation.

What does a process control engineer do?

A process control engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems that monitor and regulate industrial processes to ensure efficiency, safety, and quality. They work with control algorithms, automation tools, and instrumentation, often using software like SCADA or DCS, and may require knowledge of process dynamics and control theory. Their role involves troubleshooting, optimizing operations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by process control engineers in a manufacturing environment?

Process control engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation technologies with existing legacy systems, troubleshooting complex process issues, and ensuring minimal downtime during system upgrades. They must also balance process efficiency with strict safety and quality standards. Collaborating closely with operators, maintenance teams, and other engineers is essential to address these challenges and optimize production processes effectively.

What is process control engineering?

Process control engineering is a discipline within engineering that focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining systems used to control industrial processes. These engineers use instrumentation, sensors, and control systems like PLCs and DCS to monitor and adjust variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and chemical composition. Their work helps ensure processes run efficiently, safely, and within regulatory standards, often in industries like manufacturing, oil and gas, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Control Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Control Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical, electrical, or mechanical engineering, along with knowledge of process dynamics and control theory, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and industry certifications like ISA Certified Automation Professional is highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication make individuals stand out in this position. These skills are vital to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation of automated industrial processes, maximizing productivity and minimizing downtime.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced process control engineers working in industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, or pharmaceuticals can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with senior roles, specialized skills, and management responsibilities. Achieving this level often requires advanced degrees, extensive experience, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or Six Sigma. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and individual expertise.

What is the difference between Process Control Engineering vs Instrumentation Engineering?

AspectProcess Control EngineeringInstrumentation Engineering
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like CAP, CCSTBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like CAP, CCST
Work EnvironmentDesigning control systems, programming PLCs, optimizing processesInstalling, maintaining, calibrating instruments and sensors
Industry UsageManufacturing, oil & gas, chemical plantsManufacturing, power plants, process industries

Process Control Engineering focuses on designing and optimizing control systems to regulate industrial processes, while Instrumentation Engineering centers on selecting, installing, and maintaining the instruments that monitor and control those processes. Both roles often collaborate but serve distinct functions within the industry.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior process control engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in automation and control systems can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries like oil and gas or aerospace. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and individual skills, often including bonuses and stock options.
