Job description

The person is responsible for the programming and optimization of the paper mill's process instrumentation and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), with added focus on improving the overall reliability of mill systems, assisting in process troubleshooting, identifying and executing cost-reduction measures, and supporting any of the mill improvement projects. The Process Control Engineer also helps maintenance and operations personnel develop their problem-solving and process management skills. This position is eligible for a relocation package.

Process Control Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain production instrumentation and control systems.
  • Respond to departmental requests for changes in existing systems/equipment to modify/enhance the system/equipment to obtain desired results in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage the paper mill's Distributed Controls Systems with an emphasis on optimizing the system for improved operational efficiency.
  • Provide support and troubleshooting for the manufacturing data collection systems.
  • Assist operational leaders in troubleshooting efforts.
  • Identify cost reduction opportunities and support cost reduction efforts.
  • Utilize our processes to improve the overall efficiency of mill operations, increase productivity, and enhance the cost-effectiveness of operations.
  • Assess process effectiveness, identify potential process improvements, and help implement solutions.
  • All other assignments assigned by management

Attend appropriate meetings, produce necessary communications and documentation, plan and arrange maintenance and project activities, etc.

Interact with contractors and vendors to obtain quotes and proposals, utilize support, arrange and procure services and materials.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • Degree in one of the following: Process Controls, Electrical Engineering, Automation & Industrial Controls, Instrumentation
  • Minimum of 2-5 years' experience in a Process Control Engineer or similar role in an industrial setting.
  • Reliability improvement experience with a history of exposure to continuous improvement tools
  • Pulp and paper mill experience is preferred.
  • Experience with DCS / QCS systems is desired.
  • Experience with Proficy or other data historian systems desired.
  • Regular attendance at work is required. Ability to work additional hours during the week, on weekends, or outside of regular office hours is also required. Weekend and holiday coverage is provided as-needed in a rotation with other peers.
  • The ability to work in a typical production environment to include: sitting or standing for long periods of time, walking, climbing, reaching and bending, lifting and carrying loads not over 50 lbs. May include safely walking through our manufacturing plant and wearing required personal protection gear (i.e. hearing and foot protection).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as well as teamwork skills
  • Fluent written and spoken English
