Are you a detail-driven accounting professional ready to put your skills to work for a mission that matters?
If so, we are looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Finance team at Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County's administrative offices in Wilmington, DE. This role supports the Chief Financial Officer in managing day-to-day accounting operations and helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial reporting — from general ledger and payroll to grant compliance and annual audits. This is a Level 6 position and a member of our Quality Team.

Who We Are
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, working for the greater good is at the core of what we do at Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County. Our mission — to improve the quality of life for people with barriers to self-sufficiency through the Power of Work — guides everything we do. While our work focuses on supporting individuals, our broader vision reflects the lasting community impact that happens when people receive a hand up.

By providing job training, social services, and employment support, we empower people to build meaningful careers, strengthen their families, and contribute to thriving communities.

What You Will Do
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in overseeing daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and fixed assets
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and ensure timely completion of month-end and year-end close processes
  • Assist with preparing and monitoring organizational budgets and forecasts
  • Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP standards
  • Support accounting for grants, contracts, restricted funds, and donor-restricted contributions
  • Monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements and reporting deadlines
  • Assist with preparation of federal, state, and grant-related financial reports
  • Coordinate and assist with the annual independent financial audit and preparation of audit schedules
  • Assist in the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other regulatory filings
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial transactions
  • Supervise and mentor staff, including assigning work, reviewing performance, and providing training
  • Collaborate with department managers to provide financial guidance and budget support
  • Leverage AI technology and tools to identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, enhance data accuracy, automate routine tasks, and increase operational efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, grant agreements, and applicable federal and state regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
What We are Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and at least five years of progressive accounting experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience with annual audits and financial statement preparation; CPA certification preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of fund accounting, restricted funds, grants, and donor reporting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer systems, Microsoft Excel, accounting software, and financial reporting and budgeting tools
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong supervisory, coaching, and team-building skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse constituent population
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Experience using Sage Intacct strongly preferred
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary + incentive bonuses
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Employee discounts
  • Career growth and advancement opportunities
  • Ongoing training and development
