Job description

Summary of Responsibilities: The Student Success Coach is primarily responsible for providing academic coaching services to students. The Coach will monitor, counsel, and motivate students in both individual appointment and classroom settings. The Student Success Center provides a variety of support services to students who are academically underprepared, have a disability, or encounter challenges that inhibit their academic performance.


 

Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  1. Core Duties:
    1. Schedule and complete individual appointments with students on academic probation, students who have low grades, and students who have voluntarily signed up to receive academic coaching.
    2. Regularly communicate with students regarding appointment scheduling and re-scheduling through routine in-person, email, and phone contact. Respond to student inbound communication within reasonable timeframes.
    3. Counsel students facing academic challenges and/or personal obstacles.
    4. Work with students in developing success strategies that lead to positive academic outcomes.
    5. Assist and collaborate with faculty advisors by helping map out course schedules for students on academic probation. 
    6. Refer students to proper support services that may include, but not limited to, alternative Student Development departments, tutoring, library services, Financial Aid, ITS, or other departments as needed.
  2. Services to Students with Disabilities:
    1. Collect documentation of diagnosed disabilities and maintain confidential files.
    2. Consult with Director for accommodation approval.
    3. Monitor progress of students with disabilities in meeting academic goals.
    4. Assist students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success.
    5. Make referrals to other appropriate support services on campus.
    6. Motivate students to practice self-regulation and encourage their academic and personal development.
    7. Help students learn how to utilize assistive technology as needed.
    8. Promote disability awareness through departmental programming and initiatives.
    9. Counsel prospective students and families for participation in related Student Success Center services.
  3. Services for Probationary Students:
    1. Monitor students on academic probation through regular communication and coaching appointments.
    2. Provide study skill development in coaching meetings.
    3. Effectively communicate academic warning, academic probation, academic suspension, and satisfactory academic progress policies to students.
    4. Provide accountability sessions and goal-oriented guidance to promote academic success, as well as encouraging active participation.
    5. Assist with class registration for incoming probationary students.
    6. Counsel prospective students and families for participation in related Student Success Center services.
  4. Class instruction and Programming:
    1. Instruct EDU 099: Foundations of Academic Success, to all incoming academic probation students. 
    2. Assist with regular programming initiatives for students with disabilities and students connected with the Student Success Center.
  5. Retention Management:
    1. Follow up on assigned academic care reports as delegated by the Director.
    2. Identify students who may be at risk of failing and/or withdrawing and proactively work with students and manage the coordination of support offered to them.
    3. Work collaboratively with faculty, departmental program directors, and athletic coaches to aid in supporting students connected with the Student Success Center for academic coaching.
    4. Utilize predictive modeling for targeted first-year student contact.
    5. Monitor retention progress with specific student populations (ie. academic probation, student-athletes, students with disabilities).
  6. Other Duties:
    1. Assist with Student Development program initiatives as assigned.
    2. Assist with Student Development event days (ie. Welcome Week, Career Fair).
    3. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements - Administrative:

  2. Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.
  3. Confidentiality: Individuals must recognize that management of data, including personal information, grades, budgets, programs, and policies is necessary to the operation of the College. Such information must be kept private and confidential for the protection of the College and to obey Federal and/or State laws. Should there be doubt as to whether a certain matter is to be protected, it should be discussed with your supervisor before making a disclosure.
  4. Mental: Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems. 



Qualifications:

  1. Minimum: 
    1. Education/Certification:
      1. Master’s degree in higher education, special education, school counseling, psychology, or related field.
    2. Experience: 
      1. One to two years of experience in student support services.
    3. Skill/Abilities: 
      1. Knowledge of assistive technology.
      2. Provide technical leadership in special programming.
      3. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
      4. Operate a PC and related software.
      5. Maintain effective work relationships with staff and students.
      6. Maintain a valid driver’s license.
    4. Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
