Prn Shifts and Per Diem Nursing both offer flexible work options for registered nurses, often through staffing agencies. Prn Shifts typically involve scheduled shifts that can be assigned in advance, while Per Diem Nursing offers on-call, as-needed work without guaranteed hours. Both roles provide flexibility but differ slightly in scheduling structure.

How does scheduling typically work for PRN shifts, and what should I expect in terms of flexibility and advance notice?

PRN (pro re nata) shifts are designed to provide flexible, as-needed staffing, so scheduling often varies based on the facility's needs. You may be contacted to fill in for sick calls, high census periods, or staff shortages, sometimes with short notice. While this flexibility can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income, it can also mean that there is less predictability in your schedule. It's common to have access to an online scheduling system or to communicate directly with a staffing coordinator. Being responsive and proactive in your availability can help maximize your hours and establish reliability with your employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in PRN (as-needed) shift roles, and why are they important?

To thrive in PRN (as-needed) shift roles, you typically need current licensure or certification relevant to your field, strong clinical or technical skills, and recent hands-on experience. Familiarity with common workplace systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs) in healthcare or inventory management software in other industries, is often required. Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to quickly adapt to new environments are crucial soft skills for PRN professionals. These qualities enable you to provide effective support, maintain continuity of operations, and meet organizational needs on short notice.

What are PRN shifts?

PRN shifts refer to 'pro re nata' or 'as needed' work shifts, commonly used in healthcare settings. Employees who work PRN do not have a set schedule; instead, they fill in for regular staff when there is a shortage or increased demand. PRN workers enjoy flexibility in choosing when to work but may receive fewer benefits than full-time employees. This arrangement is popular among nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare professionals seeking work-life balance or supplemental income.
