How much do prn perfusion jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for prn perfusion in the United States is $85.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67.07 and $93.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What's harder, perfusionist or cRNA?

Perfusionists operate heart-lung machines during surgery and require specialized training, certification, and strong technical skills. cRNA (complementary RNA) work is typically research-based in molecular biology and involves laboratory skills; it is generally less physically demanding but requires advanced knowledge in genetics and biochemistry. Overall, perfusionist roles often involve more high-pressure clinical responsibilities, making them more challenging in a clinical setting.

Will perfusion be replaced by AI?

Perfusionists, including PRN perfusion staff, perform critical roles in operating heart-lung machines during surgeries. While AI and automation can assist with monitoring and data analysis, the hands-on, decision-making aspects of perfusion require specialized training and human judgment, making complete replacement unlikely in the near future.

How does a PRN Perfusionist typically integrate with the surgical team during assignments?

As a PRN Perfusionist, you are often called upon to join surgical teams on an as-needed basis, which requires you to quickly adapt to different hospital protocols and team dynamics. You'll collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure the safe operation of heart-lung machines during cardiac surgeries. Building rapport and effective communication are key, as you may work with new teams frequently and must establish trust swiftly to contribute to successful patient outcomes. Flexibility and strong clinical knowledge help you seamlessly integrate and support the surgical team, even in high-pressure environments.

What is a PRN Perfusionist?

A PRN Perfusionist is a perfusion professional who works on an as-needed, or 'pro re nata' (PRN), basis rather than as a full-time staff member. Perfusionists operate the heart-lung machine and other equipment during cardiac surgeries to manage the patient’s circulatory and respiratory functions. PRN Perfusionists provide coverage for staffing gaps, emergencies, or peak surgical periods and must be highly skilled and adaptable to different hospital environments. Their flexible schedule allows hospitals to maintain high-quality patient care without maintaining a large full-time perfusion staff.

Can a perfusionist work part-time?

Yes, perfusionists can work part-time, depending on the employer and their staffing needs. Some facilities offer flexible schedules or per diem shifts, especially in hospitals or clinics that require coverage outside standard hours. Certification and licensing requirements remain the same regardless of full-time or part-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PRN Perfusionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PRN Perfusionist, you need a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular physiology, extracorporeal circulation, and typically a bachelor's degree in perfusion science or related field along with certification (CCP). Proficiency with heart-lung machines, ECMO systems, and other advanced perfusion technology is essential. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills are vital to ensure patient safety and effective support during critical cardiac surgeries and procedures.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

Perfusionists, including PRN (as-needed) perfusion staff, can earn around $2,000 or more per day depending on experience, location, and workload. These high earnings are typically associated with specialized roles in cardiac surgery or critical care, often requiring certification and extensive training. Such compensation is common in high-demand medical environments or with overtime and on-call duties.
