As a PRN Infusion Nurse, one of the main challenges is adapting to varying schedules and last-minute assignments, which can require flexibility and strong organizational skills. Since PRN nurses fill in as needed, you may work with different teams and patient groups each shift, requiring quick rapport-building and adaptability to diverse protocols. Additionally, you may encounter complex cases or unfamiliar medications, so staying current with best practices and maintaining clear communication with the healthcare team is essential for ensuring patient safety and quality care.

What is a PRN infusion nurse?

A PRN Infusion Nurse is a registered nurse who administers intravenous (IV) therapies, such as medications, fluids, or blood products, on an as-needed basis rather than a set schedule. 'PRN' stands for 'pro re nata,' meaning 'as the situation arises,' so these nurses work flexible hours to meet patient or facility needs. They are skilled in IV insertion, monitoring patient reactions, and educating patients about their treatments. PRN Infusion Nurses often work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or patients’ homes, providing specialized care for those requiring infusion therapy.

Do prn infusion nurses get paid more?

PRN infusion nurses typically earn higher hourly rates compared to full-time staff due to the flexibility and often short-term nature of their assignments. They may also receive additional compensation for on-call hours or emergency treatments, but overall pay varies based on experience, location, and employer policies.
