Private Rbt information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Private Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), and why are they important?

To excel as a Private RBT, you need a solid understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles, a high school diploma or higher, and RBT certification. Familiarity with data collection tools, ABA software, and session documentation systems is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and adaptability set outstanding RBTs apart when working with clients and families. These skills ensure effective therapy implementation, accurate progress tracking, and supportive client relationships in private settings.

What are some common challenges private Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) face when working in home settings, and how can they prepare for them?

Private RBTs often work independently in clients’ homes, which can present unique challenges such as adapting to varying environments, limited immediate supervision, and needing to establish rapport with families. To prepare, RBTs should develop strong communication skills, practice flexibility, and maintain regular contact with supervising Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) for guidance. Staying organized and documenting session data thoroughly are also crucial for effective service delivery and professional growth.

What are Private RBTs?

Private RBTs, or Registered Behavior Technicians, are professionals who provide applied behavior analysis (ABA) services in private settings, such as clients' homes or private clinics, rather than in schools or public organizations. They are certified paraprofessionals who work under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to help individuals, often children with autism, develop positive behaviors and life skills. Private RBTs implement individualized behavior intervention plans, collect data on client progress, and communicate with families to ensure consistency and effectiveness in therapy. Working privately allows for tailored, flexible support that meets the unique needs of each client.

What is the difference between Private Rbt vs Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) - ExcelPrep, San Antonio, TX
Mission-driven role supporting ABA-backed learning for neurodiverse children. On-site in San Antonio, Texas.
About ExcelPrep
ExcelPrep is a mission-driven private program serving neurodiverse children through structured, research-based instruction. Our mission is simple: prioritize the academic and social success of neurodiverse learners. We deliver high-quality academic and therapeutic programming that supports meaningful learning outcomes.
ExcelPrep offers two distinct programs for learners ages 3-13:
  • PreK-8 Academic Program: Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching for core academics (reading, writing, math) in a structured, data-driven environment.

  • Clinical ABA Program (Ages 3-13): Cognition-linguistically based ABA focusing on language, reasoning, executive functioning, social competence, and independence.

Across ExcelPrep, we center:
  • Direct Instruction and instructional design

  • Precision Teaching and data-based decision making

  • Behavior science research foundations

  • Occupational Therapy as a prioritized therapy alongside ABA for sensory-motor development

Our mission is to provide a nurturing, academically focused learning environment where neurodiverse students develop strong academic foundations, cognitive-linguistic skills, and the confidence to succeed in school and beyond.
The Role: Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
We're seeking a compassionate, reliable RBT to deliver high-quality, data-driven ABA services under BCBA supervision. You will work closely with BCBA supervisors, OTs, SLPs, teachers, and families to implement individualized behavior support plans and skill acquisition programs that promote meaningful learning.
Key focus areas:
  • Implement evidence-based ABA procedures under supervision (e.g., DTT, NET, prompting, shaping, reinforcement) to support skill acquisition and reduce challenging behaviors

  • Collect and document data on target behaviors and skills; maintain accurate progress notes and data sheets

  • Implement Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) under BCBA guidance

  • Collaborate with BCBA, teachers, OTs, and SLPs to align ABA goals with ExcelPrep's instructional framework

  • Promote generalization and maintenance of skills across settings (classroom, therapy rooms, home)

  • Communicate regularly with families about progress, home strategies, and carryover plans

  • Maintain ethical standards and confidentiality in line with BACB guidelines and school policies

Responsibilities
  • Deliver direct ABA services to students, following individualized treatment plans

  • Collect, graph, and analyze data to inform supervisory decisions

  • Implement prompting strategies, reinforcement schedules, and errorless learning techniques

  • Assist in the development and modification of skill acquisition programs

  • Participate in team meetings and progress reporting; contribute to IEP/504 processes as applicable

  • Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with BACB supervision requirements

  • Support a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for neurodiverse students

Qualifications
  • Current Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification from BACB

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in psychology, education, or related field a plus

  • Prior experience working with children or in pediatric ABA settings preferred

  • Familiarity with DTT, NET, prompting strategies, data collection, and basic ABA principles

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working with families, teachers, and other professionals

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or experience serving Spanish-speaking families is a plus

  • Commitment to ExcelPrep's mission and a passion for meaningful learning outcomes

Schedule, Location, and Benefits
  • Location: San Antonio, TX

  • Schedule: Full-time; typical school-day hours with potential for after-hours meetings or planning

  • On-site role with opportunities for cross-campus collaboration as applicable

  • Benefits: Competitive compensation; comprehensive benefits package; professional development opportunities; supportive, mission-driven culture

Note: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
How to Apply
  • Apply directly on this posting via Indeed, ZipRecruiter, or LinkedIn

  • Submit your resume and a cover letter detailing:
    • Your RBT experience and pediatric ABA background
    • How you collaborate with BCBA, teachers, OTs, and families
    • Why you are drawn to ExcelPrep's mission
    • Your BACB certification details (certificate number) and expected supervision plan
    • Two professional references

  • Include any relevant certifications or training (e.g., data collection, behavioral coaching, etc.)
