As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for private pilot in Reston, VA is $136,199.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,000.00 and $161,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a private pilot?

Private pilots are individuals who hold a Private Pilot License (PPL), which allows them to fly aircraft for personal or recreational purposes but not for commercial compensation or hire. They are trained to operate small airplanes, follow aviation regulations, and ensure the safety of their flights. Private pilots can carry passengers, fly cross-country, and access a wide range of airports, but they must adhere to certain limitations such as not being paid for their flying services. The PPL is often seen as the first major step for those interested in aviation, either as a hobby or as a foundation for further advanced pilot certifications.

What does a private pilot do?

As a private pilot, you can use a private pilot license (PPL) to operate a non-commercial aircraft and fly yourself or passengers around. This is essentially the recreational level of flying, and private pilots often support community events through volunteer activities like taking children on short flights to help them experience the joy of flying. Private pilots are not allowed to charge passengers, transport freight for money, or perform any other tasks that could qualify as a job. To get paid for flying an aircraft, you need at least a commercial pilot's license, and many trainees obtain a private pilot license while working toward professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Private Pilot, you need a strong understanding of aeronautical principles, flight regulations, and navigation, backed by a Private Pilot Certificate from the FAA. Familiarity with flight planning software, aircraft control systems, and radio communication tools is essential. Excellent situational awareness, decision-making skills, and calmness under pressure set outstanding pilots apart. These abilities ensure safe, efficient flight operations and effective handling of unexpected situations in the air.

What are some common challenges faced by private pilots during cross-country flights?

Private pilots often encounter challenges such as varying weather conditions, complex airspace navigation, and maintaining situational awareness during cross-country flights. Managing fuel planning, coordinating with air traffic control, and ensuring compliance with flight regulations require careful preparation and decision-making. Building experience through regular flying and thorough pre-flight planning helps mitigate these challenges and ensures safe, efficient journeys.

What is the difference between Private Pilot vs Commercial Pilot?

AspectPrivate PilotCommercial Pilot
CertificationsFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot CertificateFAA Commercial Pilot Certificate
Work EnvironmentPersonal flying, recreational, non-commercial activitiesPaid flying, charter services, aerial work
Employer & Industry UsageIndividuals, flight schools, private ownersAirlines, charter companies, aerial survey

The main difference between a Private Pilot and a Commercial Pilot lies in their certifications and permitted activities. Private Pilots can fly for personal or recreational purposes but cannot be paid for their flights. Commercial Pilots, on the other hand, hold additional certifications allowing them to be compensated for their flying services. Both roles require FAA certifications, but the scope of work and employment opportunities differ significantly.

Can you get jobs as a private pilot?

Private pilots can find employment opportunities in areas such as flight instruction, aerial photography, crop dusting, and charter services. However, many private pilot jobs require additional certifications, experience, and often involve part-time or seasonal work. Advancement to paid flying positions typically requires obtaining an commercial pilot certificate and gaining flight hours.

How much money can a private pilot make?

Private pilots typically do not earn a full-time income from flying and often fly as a hobby or for personal reasons. Those who work as flight instructors or in other aviation roles can earn between $25,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and additional certifications. Most private pilots pursue flying as a supplement to other careers or for recreational purposes rather than as a primary source of income.

Job description

Aircraft Wiring Systems Lead

About Electra

At Electra, we're building the EL9 - a nine-passenger, hybrid-electric aircraft that takes off and lands in 150 feet. Our Ultra Short technology unlocks thousands of new operating locations and enables what we call Direct Aviation: quiet, point-to-point regional travel that gets people from where they are to where they want to go, without the congestion of major airports or the noise of conventional aviation.

A global company, headquartered in Manassas, VA, Electra is backed by Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and Safran, has filed for FAA Part 23 type certification, and carries 2,000+ intent to purchase from operators worldwide. We're a team of ~100 people moving fast toward first EL9 test flights in 2027 and certification by late 2029 or 2030. Every hire matter at this stage - and this role is no exception.

The Role

Electra is seeking an Aircraft Wiring Systems Lead to lead the development, integration, and optimization of wiring systems on Electra's flagship nine-passenger EL9 aircraft. This role will be responsible for the aircraft wiring - including both low voltage and high voltage - ensuring reliable, certifiable, and high-performance operation across the full aircraft lifecycle.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design of the aircraft's wiring systems, including harness design, routing, shielding, grounding, and installation.
  • Collaborate closely with airframe, avionics, flight controls, and propulsion teams to ensure wiring systems conform with design guide requirements.
  • Develop, support, and execute test plans for wiring systems, including validation, HIL setups, bench, and lab testing.
  • Evaluate and qualify suppliers, components, and subsystems, ensuring compliance standards and reliability requirements are met.
  • Generate and maintain system documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, ICDs, and certification deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers.
  • Contribute to process development and continuous improvement initiatives in electrical systems engineering.
  • Stay current with evolving hybrid-electric aircraft technologies, FAA regulations, safety, and certification standards.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering or other related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in aircraft wiring systems design, integration, and certification.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft wiring systems design preferably in Part 23 or Part 25 programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create system schematics, design wire harnesses and perform system integration.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools including Mentor Capital and Siemens NX.
  • Proficiency with industry standards including DO-254, DO-160, ARP4754A, ARP4761, or SAE AS50881.
  • Experience producing system-level documentation including design review presentations, analysis reports, test plans and reports, and certification deliverables.
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-discipline teams and experience leading technical reviews.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Bonus Points

  • Experience leading the development of electrical systems for FAA Part 23 aircraft.
  • Hands-on experience with commercial certification processes (preferably FAA Part 23).
  • Experience with hybrid-electric propulsion or advanced electrical architectures.
  • Experience managing supplier development activities.
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., JAMA) and/or system modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Private pilot license a plus.

Compensation

$130,000.00 โ€“ $160,000.00 annually. This range reflects the anticipated hiring range across all eligible locations; actual compensation is determined based on your relevant experience, skills, and geographic location. Total compensation includes performance bonus and comprehensive benefits.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance; STD, LTD, and life insurance
  • Generous PTO, sick leave, and company holidays
  • Paid winter break
  • 401(k) with immediate vesting
  • Free catered lunches, coffee, snacks, and drinks at our Manassas headquarters
  • Free on-site parking

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to offering an exciting work environment and the opportunity to be part of the team making Ultra Short flight a reality, at Electra, we offer an unparalleled total rewards package. Electra offers employees a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, STD, LTD, and life insurance, generous PTO and sick leave, company holidays, paid winter break, and a 401(k) plan with immediate vesting. Life at Electra includes a variety of perks, such as free catered lunches, amazing coffee, snacks, drinks, fruit, free parking, and opportunities for much more.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in a warehouse/aviation and office environment, which requires proper safety precautions. Work may require some physical effort in handling light materials, boxes, power tools, prototypes, and different materials or equipment.
