What is private equity strategy?

Private equity strategy refers to the approach and methods private equity firms use to identify, invest in, and manage companies to generate returns for their investors. This typically involves sourcing promising businesses, performing thorough due diligence, and leveraging capital and expertise to improve company performance. Strategies can vary, such as buyouts, growth capital, or distressed investments, depending on the firm's goals and market opportunities. The ultimate aim is to enhance the value of portfolio companies and achieve profitable exits, often through sales or public offerings.

How does a private equity strategy professional typically collaborate with other teams during the investment lifecycle?

Private Equity Strategy professionals play a pivotal role in working alongside deal teams, portfolio company management, and operational specialists throughout the investment process. They collaborate closely with investment professionals to conduct due diligence, assess market entry opportunities, and shape value-creation plans. Additionally, they often partner with portfolio company executives to implement strategic initiatives and track performance. This cross-functional collaboration ensures that investments are positioned for growth and that operational improvements are realized post-acquisition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in private equity strategy, and why are they important?

To thrive in Private Equity Strategy, you need strong analytical abilities, financial modeling expertise, and a solid academic background in finance, economics, or business. Mastery of Excel, PowerPoint, and financial analysis tools, along with experience using databases like Bloomberg or Capital IQ, is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly help professionals excel in this field. These competencies are vital for making informed investment decisions, developing value-creation strategies, and collaborating effectively with portfolio companies and stakeholders.

Job description

Bain Capital Overview

Bain Capital, LP is one of the world's leading private investment firms with approximately $165 billion of assets under management that creates lasting impact for our investors, teams, businesses, and the communities in which we live. Since our founding in 1984, we've applied our insight and experience to organically expand into several asset classes including private equity, credit, public equity, venture capital and real estate. We leverage our shared platform to capture cross-asset class opportunities in strategic areas of focus. With offices on four continents, our global team aligns our interests with those of our investors for lasting impact.

Bain Capital Private Equity Overview

To date, Bain Capital Private Equity has raised twelve global private equity funds, five European funds and four Asian funds; and made over 1,100 investments. Our private equity activity primarily includes leveraged buyouts and growth capital invested across a wide variety of sectors. We believe the most critical ingredients in a company's success are the management team and the alignment of management incentives with those of the investors. Our portfolio companies have significant management-equity ownership as a key part of the investment strategy. Bain Capital professionals are significant investors in each transaction, which achieves an alignment of goals with portfolio company management teams.

The group has developed significant expertise in several business areas including technology, healthcare, retail, telecommunications, industrial and consumer products. Transaction types include leveraged acquisitions, expansion capital, growth buyouts, turnarounds, consolidation plays, private buyouts, public company recapitalizations, convertible preferred investments, and financial restructurings.

In addition to submitting your Workday application, we ask that you also complete this brief online assessment with our partners at the Predictive Index so that we can learn a bit more about your ability to process complex information.Note that we will not be able to consider you for interviews until we receive both your Workday application and Predictive Index assessments.

The assessment is broken-up into two sections - an untimed Behavioral Assessment, which measures work and communication needs, and a timed 12-minute Cognitive Assessment measuring a person's capacity to learn, adapt and grasp new concepts. Please set aside a total of 15-20 undisturbed minutes to complete this. Once you complete the Behavioral Assessment, Predictive Index will email you a separate link to complete the timed Cognitive Assessment (this is a different link than the one above). Please check your spam folder if you do not immediately receive the second link or reach out to Sam Parlato with any questions. Feel free to check out this practice test which has been designed to familiarize you with the PI Cognitive Assessment process. Your answers to these sample questions do not affect your official PI Cognitive Assessment results.
