Location: Mississauga, ON, CAN - 2300 Meadowvale Blvd (Hybrid)

The Data Governance Analyst Intern plays a critical role in supporting the execution of data governance strategies within the Specialty Health business unit. This role ensures data quality, consistency, compliance, and integrity across critical data assets, enabling trusted data for analytics, reporting, and regulatory obligations.

The intern collaborates with business stakeholders, data stewards, Enterprise Data Governance, and technology teams to implement governance controls, manage metadata, and drive continuous data quality improvement initiatives.

Works closely with: Data Owners, Data Stewards, Data Quality Analysts, Enterprise Data Governance, Control Partners (Compliance and Legal) and Data & Analytics teams.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data Governance & Compliance

  • Execute and support enterprise data governance frameworks, policies, and standards.

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory and privacy requirements (e.g., PHI/PII, PIPEDA).

  • Support data classification, retention, and access governance processes.

2. Data Quality Management

  • Define, implement, and monitor data quality rules and controls for critical data elements (CDEs).

  • Perform data profiling, data quality assessments, and trend analysis.

  • Identify, track, and support remediation of data quality issues.

3. Metadata & Data Catalog Management

  • Identify critical data assets and maintain metadata in the enterprise data catalog (e.g., Alation).

  • Define and maintain business glossary terms, data definitions, and lineage.

  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of data asset inventories.

4. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with business data owners, stewards, and cross-functional teams to align governance practices.

  • Support stakeholder onboarding to data governance processes and tools.

  • Act as a liaison between business and technical teams to translate governance requirements.

5. Governance Operations & Reporting

  • Support governance KPI development, dashboards, and reporting.

  • Monitor compliance with governance controls and escalate risks or gaps.

  • Document governance procedures, standards, and SOPs.

6. Data Access & Risk Management

  • Support data access reviews and ensure alignment with data sensitivity and classification.

  • Validate access requests and enforce governance approval workflows.

  • Identify risks related to data usage and support mitigation strategies.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Information Systems, Information Management, Data Management, Health Informatics, Health Information Management, Business Analytics, or a related field.

  • Demonstrates interest in data governance, data privacy, information security, healthcare data management, regulatory compliance, or data quality management.

  • 2-4+ years of experience in data governance, data quality, or data management.

  • Experience working with healthcare, biopharma, or Specialty Health data

  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, data quality methodologies, and metadata management.

  • Familiarity with data governance tools (e.g., Alation) and data platforms (e.g., Snowflake).

  • Understanding of Canadian privacy regulations (e.g., PIPEDA) and PHI/PII handling.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
