Summary Statement

A class incumbent provides critical training services to support the mission of the Department of Correction (DOC) by developing, delivering and evaluating all curriculums delivered by the Training Academy. A class incumbent ensures the quality, consistency, integration and compliance of training, including evidence-based programs, with all regulatory, certification and accreditation standards.\r\n

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.\r\n\r\n Develop, implement and evaluate DOC training, development, informational, and/or educational programs, courses, curricula, training resources, lesson plans, materials, and visual aids. \r\n \r\n Directly present Training Academy courses such as CEIT and BOTC including inmate supervision, control tactics, report writing, case processing, and relevant laws, rules and regulations such as those pertaining to search and seizure. \r\n \r\n Train, supervise and act as role-model on maintaining discipline and security within Correctional Institutions, Probation and Parole District Offices and the community. \r\n \r\n Develop specific skill sets in staff, preparing them to work effectively with inmates while enforcing all rules, regulations and procedures affecting inmate discipline, security and safety with emphasis on security, safety and rehabilitation.\r\n \r\n Evaluate performance of Cadets during training; provide counseling, provide feedback, and make recommendations based on the performance of Cadets and staff.\r\n \r\n Present classroom training including using formal classroom instruction, exercises, handouts, materials, visual aids, etc. for group or one-on-one instruction. \r\n \r\n Research, evaluate, and select materials, handouts, visual aids, exercises, etc. that will best promote learning including implementing evidence-based practices into curriculum.\r\n \r\n Evaluate course effectiveness and participate on committees that provide reviews and recommendations for policy updates; review the Academy's Standard Operating Procedures and make recommendations for updates as necessary.\r\n \r\n May conduct staff personal and property searches on a daily basis to ensure safety and security of the Administration Building; train and demonstrate proper evidence handling to staff in performance of their regular duties. \r\n \r\n May have responsibility for budget, grant, and/or contract administration. \r\n\r\n

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Training Instructor\r\nApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:\r\n\r\n At least 19 and years of age. \r\n Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. \r\n Three years' experience inworking with offenders in a correctional facility and/or a community supervision unit with responsibility for security, custody, and rehabilitation of inmates. \r\n Two years' experience inpresenting training or education courses using a variety of training methods such as lecture, e-training, structured exercises, role play or group discussion as well as the use of training materials such as overheads, PowerPoint, handouts or videos. \r\n Two years' experience in preparing and developing training or education courses which includes designing learning objectives, curricula and materials. \r\n Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving). \r\n\r\n

Applicants may only apply if they are current permanent employees of the State of Delaware Dept. of Correction in a position covered by the Merit System who have completed their initial probationary period.\r\n\r\n\r\nApplicants selected for interview will also be required to conduct a timed presentation.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nEmployees in a Correctional Officer series position will be eligible to retire under the provisions of HB363 if, at the time of retirement, they have completed twenty-five (25) years of pension creditable State services and with at least twenty (20) of those years of pension creditable service as a CO series classified position.\r\n
