Job description

Position: Lab Assistant

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Director - Lab

Direct Reports: None

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Lab Assistant is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients, performs other clinical duties in the department and medical office as assigned. Keeps complete and accurate records. Acts as a positive contact point for patients and visitors. Keeps appropriate inventory of purchased supplies under direction of the department leader.

General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Accurately inputs all registration information into EMR.
  • Processes specimens and transports those specimens to designated areas following standard operating procedures.
  • Accurately orders tests from outpatient orders; faxes reports (EMR and manual), and scans orders and reports; accurately enters diagnosis codes into EMR and obtains signed ABNs when necessary.
  • Safely draws blood on all patient types and ages.
  • Assesses work needs and completes tasks in order of priority in the assigned work area.
  • Ensures correct patient identity using two patient identifiers; collects and labels specimens.
  • Performs EKGs accurately using correct Medical Record numbers and names, and ensures results are transmitted to the EMR system.
  • Reviews department inventory levels and maintains appropriate level of supplies.
  • Follows standard precautions and uses equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Performs all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; utilizes established hand-off communication protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all department data and activities.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • High School diploma / Equivalent combination of education and experience Required

Certification/Licensure Requirements

  • Phlebotomy Certification Preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Phlebotomy minimum 2 years Preferred

Computer Skills

  • Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate EMR programs

Additional Skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
