Job Description

Job Title: Printshop Specialist

Division: Operations
Department: Printshop
Reports to: Printshop Lead
Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with occasional in-person meetings (location-dependent), expected to be on-site during convention dates, including the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Printshop Specialist is a hands-on, detail-oriented staff member responsible for the physical deployment and recovery of all official event signage in the convention center, outdoor areas, and convention hotels. Operating directly under the Printshop Lead, you will execute the vital pre-convention task of assembling sign holders, placing physical signs in their precise locations according to the master sign index, and ensuring directional and informational markers remain clear. Following the event, you will systematically remove, inventory, and pack away/dispose of sign assets. If you enjoy active, physical work and take pride in transforming an empty venue into an organized, easily navigable convention space, this role is a perfect fit.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required to work a set schedule
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence is required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your duties will focus on spatial staging, physical placement, index tracking, and post-event asset recovery:

  • Pre-Con Signage Setup: Assist in unpacking, assembling, and preparing physical sign holders, stands, and frames prior to the official opening of the convention
  • Placement & Indexing: Systematically place directional markers, room signs, and safety notices in their designated locations throughout the venue, adhering strictly to the master sign index
  • Post-Con Teardown & Recovery: Execute the systematic disassembly and collection of all physical signage, frames, and hardware after the convention closes, organizing items safely into storage containers for transport or disposing per master sign index
  • Collaborative Team Support: Assist fellow Printshop team members with logistics, shifting extra inventory, and taking on other operational tasks as directed by department leadership
Qualifications

Required:

  • Attention to Detail: Strict reliability when reading location codes, navigating venue layouts, and double-checking placements against the sign index
  • Physical Capability: Ability to stand, walk extensive venue distances, bend, lift, and carry bulky sign stands or stacks of physical media during setup and breakdown days
  • Punctuality & Shift Reliability: Strict adherence to setup and teardown schedules; venue signage must be fully deployed before attendees arrive on site

Preferred:

  • Fandom & Convention Knowledge: Familiarity with convention flow, high-traffic bottlenecks, and general fandom culture, helping you spot potential issues with signage placement
  • Basic Tool & Assembly Skills: Familiarity with basic hand tools (e.g., Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, zip ties) used to assemble or secure structural sign stands
  • Spatial Awareness & Problem-Solving: Ability to recognize when a sign placement might obstruct foot traffic or door swings and politely coordinate minor adjustments with your Lead
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request

Anthro SoCal is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
