Principal Fire Protection Engineer information

What are Principal Fire Protection Engineers?

Principal Fire Protection Engineers are senior professionals who lead the design, implementation, and management of fire protection systems in buildings and industrial facilities. They ensure that structures comply with fire safety codes and standards, conduct risk assessments, and develop solutions to prevent and mitigate fire hazards. In addition to technical expertise, they often supervise teams, consult with clients, and guide projects from concept through completion. Their role is critical in safeguarding lives and property through proactive fire safety engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Principal Fire Protection Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Principal Fire Protection Engineer, you need an in-depth understanding of fire protection engineering principles, building codes, and extensive experience, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Mastery of technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, hydraulic calculation software, and familiarity with NFPA standards is essential. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you manage teams and liaise with clients and regulatory bodies. These skills ensure the design and implementation of fire protection systems that safeguard lives, property, and comply with legal requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by a Principal Fire Protection Engineer when managing large-scale projects?

Principal Fire Protection Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple disciplines, ensuring compliance with evolving fire codes, and managing tight project timelines. They must balance technical requirements with client expectations and frequently lead teams through complex problem-solving scenarios. Effective communication and proactive risk management are essential for overcoming these obstacles and delivering safe, code-compliant designs on schedule.

Job description

At ReLogic Research, you won't be just another headcount. We're a tight-knit team of engineers, physicists, and technical professionals solving some of the most complex challenges in national defense - and we're looking for a Principal or Senior Principal Engineer who is ready to help transition proven solid rocket motor technologies into real programs now.

As an AS9100D-certified small business supporting the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Missile Defense Agency, we move fast, trust our people, and give engineers meaningful ownership of their work. Unlike larger organizations, you won't be buried in a single program - you'll work across multiple efforts simultaneously with immediate technical impact and direct visibility into technology transition.

The feasibility work is done. The technologies are proven. This role exists to take them across the finish line - advancing low-cost alternative solid rocket motor technologies from advanced development into prototype systems, programs of record, and eventual flight.

If you've spent your career in SRM development and are ready to help move propulsion technologies from proven concepts into operational systems, ReLogic is where you belong.

Leveling for this role will be based on demonstrated experience, technical depth, and prior program responsibilities. Exceptional candidates may be considered at either the Principal or Senior Principal level.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and support technical transition efforts across multiple active solid rocket motor programs simultaneously, advancing proven low-cost alternative SRM technologies into prototype systems and programs of record
  • Lead and support development and transition of automated propellant casting, automated motor case fabrication, and alternative thermal protection system materials including rayon alternatives
  • Develop and execute technology transition plans bridging the gap between proven concepts and program insertion
  • Support small-scale static fire testing at ReLogic facilities including test planning, execution, instrumentation coordination, and post-test data reduction
  • Support full-scale static fire testing and eventual flight test activities at government or contractor test facilities
  • Contribute to test plans, procedures, safety documentation, and post-test analysis in support of technology maturation and transition milestones
  • Provide senior technical leadership across SRM design, manufacturing, integration, and technology maturation activities
  • Interface with government customers, program offices, and prime contractors to advance technology maturation and insertion efforts
  • Support proposal development, technology roadmaps, and program planning for SRM-related efforts
  • Provide technical mentorship and engineering oversight across propulsion-related efforts
  • Represent ReLogic as a subject matter expert in SRM technology at customer meetings, technical reviews, and conferences

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • 8+ years of experience in solid rocket motor development, propulsion manufacturing, or a related propulsion field (additional experience required for Senior Principal level consideration)
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Energetics and propellant formulation
    • Motor case fabrication and manufacturing
    • Thermal protection systems and insulation materials
  • Experience supporting technology maturation, transition, or insertion efforts in a defense environment
  • Experience with solid rocket motor static fire testing including test planning, execution, and post-test analysis
  • Ability to work across design, manufacturing, testing, and program teams to advance technology readiness and operational implementation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including experience presenting technical information to government customers, program offices, or prime contractors
  • Active Secret security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain a clearance
  • Must be a U.S. citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Experience with automated propellant casting or automated composite case fabrication processes
  • Familiarity with rayon alternative thermal protection system materials and qualification approaches
  • Experience with JANNAF, MIL-SPEC, or DoD propulsion standards and processes
  • Experience supporting programs of record insertion or technology transition across TRL 4-7
  • Familiarity with SBIR/STTR programs or other defense technology development pathways
  • Experience supporting flight test activities and associated safety and documentation requirements
  • Experience at or with government propulsion laboratories such as AFRL, DEVCOM, or NASA Marshall

This is a full-time salaried position with highly competitive compensation based on experience and skills, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for career growth. Approximately 25% travel is expected.
