What is price cost analysis?

Price cost analysis is the process of evaluating a product or service's price by comparing it to the underlying costs involved in its production and delivery. This analysis helps organizations determine whether a price is reasonable and fair based on factors like materials, labor, overhead, and profit margins. It is commonly used in procurement and contracting to ensure that the costs charged by suppliers are justified. Effective price cost analysis can lead to better negotiation outcomes and improved budgeting within organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a price cost analyst?

To thrive as a Price Cost Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in financial modeling, and a background in finance, accounting, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools such as Excel, ERP systems, and cost analysis software, along with certifications like Certified Cost Professional (CCP), is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are critical soft skills for interpreting data and presenting findings to stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are important to ensure accurate cost evaluations, support strategic decision-making, and maintain organizational profitability.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in price cost analysis roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Price Cost Analysis often encounter challenges such as handling incomplete or inconsistent data from suppliers, aligning cost estimates with dynamic market trends, and effectively communicating findings to non-technical stakeholders. To address these issues, it's important to develop strong analytical skills, stay updated on industry and market developments, and build collaborative relationships with procurement, engineering, and finance teams. Leveraging specialized software and maintaining clear documentation can also help streamline the analysis process and support data-driven decision-making.

Job Requirements

Who We Are:

Quest Global delivers world-class end-to-end engineering solutions by leveraging our deep industry knowledge and digital expertise. By bringing together technologies and industries, alongside the contributions of diverse individuals and their areas of expertise, we can solve problems better, faster. This multi-dimensional approach enables us to solve the most critical and large-scale challenges across the aerospace & defense, automotive, energy, hi-tech, healthcare, medical devices, rail and semiconductor industries.

We are looking for humble geniuses, who believe that engineering has the potential to make the impossible possible; innovators, who are not only inspired by technology and innovation, but also perpetually driven to design, develop, and test as a trusted partner for Fortune 500 customers. As a team of remarkably diverse engineers, we recognize that what we are really engineering is a brighter future for us all. If you want to contribute to meaningful work and be part of an organization that truly believes when you win, we all win, and when you fail, we all learn, then we’re eager to hear from you.

The achievers and courageous challenge-crushers we seek, have the following characteristics and skills:

What You Will Do:

  • Receive and triage supplier commerciality assertions; validate submission completeness against FAR 2.101 criteria before work begins
  • Drive supplier interface — request salient characteristic data, commercial invoices, catalog/price lists, and sales history; escalate and track non-responsive suppliers against cycle-time commitments
  • Conduct independent market research to establish that a customary commercial market exists — commercial offerings, platform usage, comparable sources inside and outside the customer's supply base
  • Build the price analysis: adjust the similar-item sales history via price walk for form/fit/function differences, and document the basis for fair and reasonable pricing
  • Assemble the complete determination package — technical assessment, market evidence, price justification, and narrative — to customer format and audit standard
  • Maintain traceability and audit-ready documentation sufficient to withstand DCMA/DCAA review and customer internal audit
  • Report backlog status, cycle time, and supplier responsiveness metrics; flag assertions likely to fail early rather than late

What You Will Bring:

  • 5+ years in government contracts, subcontract administration, procurement compliance, or price/cost analysis in aerospace & defense
  • Working knowledge of FAR Part 12, FAR Part 15, FAR 2.101 commercial product/service definitions, TINA thresholds, and DFARS 212 commerciality determination requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with "of a type" / similar-to commerciality assertions and supporting evidence packages
  • Price analysis skills — comparability adjustments, sales history normalization, market-based price reasonableness
  • Direct supplier-facing experience; able to push a reluctant supplier for data without damaging the relationship
  • Strong technical writing; the narrative is the deliverable
  • U.S. person status; ability to obtain access to export-controlled data

Pay Range: $100,000 - $125,000 per year

Compensation decisions are made based on factors including experience, skills, education, and other job-related factors, in accordance with our internal pay structure. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan.

Work Requirements: This role is considered a Hybrid position, based in Phoenix, AZ.

Travel Requirements: Due to the nature of the work, no travel is required.

Citizenship Requirement: Due to the nature of the work, U.S. citizenship is required.

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • 401(k) matching
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
  • Vision insurance
