Preservation Intern information

What is a preservation intern?

Preservation Interns are typically students or recent graduates who assist professionals in the field of historic preservation, conservation, or archives. Their responsibilities often include conducting research, cataloging artifacts or documents, assisting with restoration projects, and helping to maintain historical collections. These internships provide hands-on experience and exposure to the preservation field, often in museums, libraries, historical societies, or government agencies. Interns may also participate in educational programming and gain insight into the processes of conserving and protecting cultural heritage.

What types of projects can a preservation intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Preservation Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of projects, such as conducting condition assessments of historic materials, cataloging and rehousing artifacts, and supporting conservation treatments under the guidance of experienced staff. Interns often help with documentation, research, and environmental monitoring to ensure the long-term care of collections. Collaboration with curators, conservators, and archivists is common, providing valuable exposure to multiple aspects of preservation work and insight into potential career paths within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a preservation intern, and why are they important?

Familiarity with preservation techniques, collection management systems, and basic conservation tools is often required. Strong organizational abilities, teamwork, and clear communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the careful handling, documentation, and long-term protection of historical artifacts and materials.
