What is a preschool internship?

A preschool internship is a short-term, supervised work experience in a preschool setting, designed for students or aspiring early childhood educators. Interns typically assist teachers with classroom activities, help manage children, and gain practical skills in child development and classroom management. The internship provides hands-on exposure to the daily responsibilities of preschool educators and can be a valuable step toward a career in early childhood education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a preschool intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Preschool Intern, you need a basic understanding of early childhood development, classroom management, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant education program. Familiarity with learning management systems, child observation tools, and basic first aid certification are commonly required. Patience, creativity, and strong communication skills help interns engage effectively with young children and support teachers. These skills are crucial for fostering a safe, nurturing, and educational environment that supports children's growth and learning.

What are some common challenges faced during a preschool internship and how can they be effectively managed?

Preschool internships often involve adapting to a fast-paced environment where young children require constant supervision and engagement. Interns may find it challenging to balance multiple responsibilities, such as assisting with lesson planning, managing classroom behavior, and communicating with both children and staff. Building strong communication skills, seeking feedback from mentors, and observing experienced teachers can help interns overcome these challenges. Flexibility, patience, and a willingness to learn are key to thriving in this role and making the most of the internship experience.

Internships provide a stepping stone into the profession, while preschool teachers are full-time staff responsible for children's education and well-being.

How to get a job in a preschool internship?

Job description

About the Role
We're seeking a nurturing, dedicated Lead Teacher for our Two's Toddler Program. You'll create a safe, warm, and engaging classroom that supports the social-emotional, developmental, and educational needs of two-year-olds — many of whom are entering a school setting for the very first time. Through consistent routines, responsive relationships, and joyful learning experiences, you'll help children feel safe, confident, and ready to grow.

New Graduates Welcome!
Supervised classroom hours from your degree — including student teaching, practicums, or internships — count toward the experience requirement. We value patient, empathetic educators, not just years of tenure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a nurturing, developmentally appropriate classroom for two-year-olds
  • Support children's social-emotional development through transitions and new experiences
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum
  • Observe, assess, and document children's learning and development
  • Collaborate with Assistant Teachers and paraprofessionals
  • Build positive, culturally responsive relationships with families
  • Maintain classroom safety and compliance with NYC DOHMH Article 47 standards

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience with young children in an early childhood setting (student teaching, internships, and practicum hours count)
  • Meet ONE of the following:
  • Bachelor's Degree + NYS Certification
  • Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education (or related field) + 3 years of experience
  • Study Plan Eligible: 90+ undergraduate credits + 3 years of experience with young children

What We Offer

  • Mentorship from experienced Lead Teachers and center leadership
  • A collaborative, mission-driven team
  • Health Insurance
  • Paid Time Off

Ready to help young children take their first steps in their educational journey? Apply today!
