Nature of the work 

Organizing, preparing and conducting a series of activities, in keeping with the educational project, fostering the overall development of students in preschool and elementary school in his or her care, while ensuring their health and safety.

This employee can be called upon to provide support in the classroom. 

Description of tasks

TASKS IN THE DAYCARE

Student assistance, support and safety

  • Assists students in dressing and undressing.
  • Assists students in preparing and eating their meals and snacks, while ensuring that the rules promoting hygiene and well-being are observed.
  • Ensures the supervision and safety of students in compliance with the rules of conduct, safety measures and recommendations of parents
  • Administers first aid and, if necessary, administers medications according to medical requirements and the school’s policy and the parents’ instructions.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of the premises and upkeep of material and equipment.

Activities and communication

  • Plans, conducts and participates in activities in keeping with the education program. 
  • Records student attendance. 
  • Informs parents and all those concerned about a student’s behaviour
  • Takes part in meetings organized by the day care service technician as regards the organization and operation of the day care service
  • She may be called upon to introduce new school-based educators to the job.
  • Performs any other related duty.

TASKS IN THE CLASSROOM

Student assistance and support

  • Help students settle into the classroom and prepare for learning activities
  • Assist in developing students' independence (dressing, managing materials, etc.)
  • Provide support for student learning, under the teacher's guidance

Student supervision and safety

  • Accompany and supervise students during arrival, dismissal, and transitions
  • Ensure student safety and enforce rules of conduct
  • Provide first aid when needed

Classroom organization and administrative support

  • Assist in classroom upkeep and material organization
  • Prepare and display educational materials
  • Help with administrative tasks, such as photocopying or event coordination

Collaboration and communication

  • Work alongside the teacher 
  • Attend parent meetings upon request
  • Support the planning of activities in collaboration with the principal and school team

Desired profile

Schooling

Meet one of the following 2 profiles:

  1. Hold a Secondary School Diploma and an Attestation of  Vocational Studies in Daycare Services or
  2. Hold a diploma and attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority

Experience

Have one (1) year of pertinent experience

Other requirements

  1. Fluent in French and English (written and oral)
  2. Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of either: 
    1. standard first aid course of a minimum eight (8)-hour duration
    2. a refresher course of a minimum six(6)-hour duration updating the skills acquired in the course mentioned in subparagraph 1.
