How much do preimplantation genetic testing jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for preimplantation genetic testing in the United States is $27.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $29.09 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is preimplantation genetic testing?

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a procedure used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) to screen embryos for specific genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities before they are implanted into the uterus. This testing helps identify embryos that are more likely to result in a healthy pregnancy, reducing the risk of passing on genetic disorders. PGT is commonly recommended for couples with a known risk of inherited genetic conditions or for those who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss or failed IVF cycles.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a preimplantation genetic testing specialist?

To thrive as a Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) specialist, you need a strong background in genetics, molecular biology, and reproductive medicine, often supported by a relevant degree such as a master's or PhD in genetics or embryology. Familiarity with laboratory techniques like PCR, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics software, as well as certification through organizations such as the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB), is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for accurately interpreting results and collaborating with clinical teams. These skills ensure precise genetic analysis, support patient care, and help prevent the transmission of genetic disorders.

What are common challenges faced by professionals performing preimplantation genetic testing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals involved in Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) often face challenges such as handling delicate embryos, ensuring accurate genetic analysis under tight time constraints, and maintaining clear communication with embryologists and genetic counselors. Addressing these challenges requires meticulous laboratory technique, ongoing training on the latest genetic technologies, and strong teamwork. Staying updated on evolving protocols and fostering transparent collaboration with IVF clinicians can help ensure both the accuracy of results and the best outcomes for patients.

What is the difference between Preimplantation Genetic Testing vs Embryologist?

AspectPreimplantation Genetic TestingEmbryologist
CredentialsLaboratory certifications, genetic counseling backgroundBiology or embryology degree, lab certifications
Work EnvironmentFertility clinics, genetic labsFertility clinics, research labs
Industry UsageGenetic analysis of embryosHandling and culturing embryos

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) focuses on analyzing embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation, requiring genetic and laboratory expertise. Embryologists handle embryo development, culture, and assessment. While both roles work in fertility clinics, PGT specialists focus on genetic screening, whereas embryologists manage embryo handling and culture. Understanding these differences helps patients and clinics choose the right professionals for fertility treatments.
