How much do predictive maintenance data science jobs jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for predictive maintenance data science jobs in the United States is $122,738.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,500.00 and $136,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists working in predictive maintenance, and how can they be addressed?

Data scientists in predictive maintenance often face challenges such as dealing with imbalanced or incomplete datasets, integrating data from different sources (like sensors and maintenance logs), and ensuring model interpretability for stakeholders. Addressing these challenges involves collaborating closely with domain experts to validate data quality, using advanced techniques like data augmentation or anomaly detection, and clearly communicating results with maintenance teams. Building robust, scalable models also requires staying updated on the latest machine learning methods and best practices in industrial data science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Predictive Maintenance Data Science jobs, and why are they important?

To thrive in Predictive Maintenance Data Science roles, you need a solid background in statistics, machine learning, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in data science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, R, SQL, and predictive analytics platforms, along with experience using sensors and IoT data, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally help data scientists translate insights into actionable maintenance strategies. These skills enable professionals to accurately predict equipment failures, reduce downtime, and drive operational efficiency.

What is the difference between Predictive Maintenance Data Science Jobs vs Machine Learning Engineer in the same industry?

AspectPredictive Maintenance Data Science JobsMachine Learning Engineer
Required CredentialsDegree in Data Science, Statistics, or related field; experience with predictive analyticsDegree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, or maintenance teamsTech companies, R&D labs, or software development teams
Industry UsageUsed primarily in manufacturing, energy, and industrial sectors for equipment maintenanceUsed across various industries for developing scalable machine learning solutions

Predictive Maintenance Data Science Jobs focus on analyzing sensor data to predict equipment failures, often in industrial environments. Machine Learning Engineers develop and deploy scalable ML models across diverse applications. While both roles require data science and programming skills, predictive maintenance roles are more industry-specific, whereas ML engineering is broader in scope.

What are predictive maintenance data science jobs?

Predictive maintenance data science jobs involve using data analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling to anticipate when equipment or machinery will require maintenance. Professionals in these roles collect and analyze data from sensors, operational logs, and other sources to identify patterns that precede equipment failures. Their goal is to minimize unplanned downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and improve equipment reliability by predicting issues before they occur. These jobs often require expertise in data science, engineering principles, and domain knowledge relevant to the specific industry.
