JOB SUMMARY:

The Data & AI Insights Intern supports Amtrak's Digital Technology organization by helping the team turn data into insights that inform decisions across the business. This includes assisting with data preparation, exploring patterns and trends, and supporting simple models or analyses that help answer business questions. 
 

Working closely with and under the guidance of senior team members, this role provides exposure to how data is gathered, cleaned, analyzed, and turned into findings that others can act on, while building foundational skills in analysis, light engineering, and clear communication of results. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with gathering, cleaning, and organizing data so it is ready for analysis. 

  • Help explore data to identify patterns, trends, or anomalies, and summarize findings for the team. 

  • Support the building and testing of simple analyses or models under the guidance of senior team members. 

  • Assist with basic engineering tasks that keep data flowing reliably, such as helping test or document a data process. 

  • Shadow senior team members to learn how analyses and findings are turned into recommendations for the business. 

  • Help maintain clear documentation for datasets, analyses, and assumptions. 

  • Take on small, well-defined tasks within larger analytics or data projects, as assigned. 

  • Participate in team meetings, demos, and retrospectives to learn how the group plans and delivers its work. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field. 

  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 

  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. 

  • Basic familiarity with analyzing data, including simple statistics or trend analysis. 

  • Basic familiarity with programming or scripting concepts. 

  • Strong attention to detail and clear written and verbal communication skills. 

PREFERREFD QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Coursework or project experience involving data analysis, statistics, or visualization. 

  • Exposure to organizing or working with larger datasets. 

  • Familiarity with building or testing simple predictive or AI-based models. 

  • Demonstrated curiosity about how data and AI can be used to support better business decisions. 

PAY TRANSPARENCY:

The hourly range is $18.00 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
