What is a pre wire?

Pre Wire jobs involve the installation of electrical wiring, cables, or other low-voltage components in a building before the walls and ceilings are closed up. This step is crucial in new construction or major renovations, as it lays the foundation for future electrical systems, such as lighting, outlets, internet, and security systems. Pre Wire technicians ensure that all necessary wiring is safely and efficiently installed according to building codes and project specifications. Proper pre-wiring can save time and money by preventing costly retrofits later on.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pre wire technician?

To thrive as a Pre Wire Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, wiring methods, and blueprint reading, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with hand and power tools, cable testers, and industry standards such as NEC code is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for ensuring precise installations and collaborating with other trades. Mastery of these skills and qualities is crucial for maintaining safety, quality, and efficiency in residential or commercial construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by pre wire technicians during large-scale construction projects?

Pre Wire technicians often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple trades on-site, adhering to tight construction schedules, and ensuring all wiring is installed according to the latest building codes and specifications. Communication and flexibility are essential, as plans may change rapidly, requiring adjustments to the wiring layout. Staying organized and proactive helps technicians manage these complexities and deliver high-quality work that supports the project's overall success.

Leading Smart Home, Networking & Security Projects Tired of just pulling wire? We need a Lead Technician to run high-end projects, program systems (Control4/Savant), and manage our install team in Friendswood. No more being just a number-come run your own crew.
About the Role Jarvis Smart Homes is seeking a Lead AV Technician to join our growing team. This is a hands-on working lead role for someone who excels at the physical side of installation but also possesses the technical skills to program systems and manage a job site.
We currently have a dedicated Low-Voltage Helper to assist with pre-wire, retrofitting, and mounting. Your goal is to lead the team in the field, ensure installations meet our high standards, and handle the final system programming and commissioning.
What You Will Do
  • Lead Installations: Work alongside and supervise a helper on residential and commercial projects. This is a hands-on role-you will be crawling attics, mounting TVs, and pulling wire, but you set the pace and quality standard.
  • System Programming: Handle the configuration and programming of automation systems. You will own the final 20% of the job-making sure everything works before the client sees it.
  • Network Deployment: Configure robust networks (Ubiquiti, Eero), including IP schemes, VLANs, and WAPs to ensure a solid foundation for our systems.
  • Site Management: Act as the on-site Project Manager. You will coordinate with the owner, manage the helper's tasks, and ensure the job is completed efficiently and correctly the first time.
  • Mentorship: Teach and guide the junior technician to improve their skills and efficiency.

What We Are Looking For
  • Experience: 3+ years in the custom integration industry. You must be comfortable with both rough-in (pre-wire) and trim-out phases.
  • Programming Skills: Hands-on experience with Control4 (Composer Pro) and/or Savant (Blueprint). Note: We will train the right Lead on specific systems, but you must know the fundamentals of automation programming.
  • Networking Knowledge: Strong understanding of home networking (static IPs, mesh networks, basic managed switching concepts).
  • Leadership: Ability to manage a job site and a helper without constant supervision.
  • Professionalism: You take pride in your work (clean wiring, clean job site) and have excellent communication skills with clients.
  • Requirements: Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check.

Growth & Career Path We are committed to developing our people. This role offers a pathway to:
  • Lead Technician → Operations/Project Manager As the company expands, this position will gain exposure to commercial AV, structured cabling, and complex project planning.

About Jarvis Smart Homes Based in Friendswood, Jarvis Smart Homes is a locally owned integrator that prioritizes quality craftsmanship over high-volume churn. We serve high-end residential clients who expect perfection, and we treat our team with that same level of respect.
Unlike massive corporate shops where you are just a number on a spreadsheet, here you will work directly with the owner, have a dedicated helper for the heavy lifting, and have a genuine say in how projects are run. We are building a team where "doing it right the first time" matters more than "doing it fast."
Compensation: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
Our company is dedicated to serving our customers and our community. Our team is chosen for their knowledge, experience, training, efficiency and courtesy. If you want to be part of our home-grown culture and winning team, please apply today!
