What is a pre service teacher?

Pre service teachers are individuals who are in the process of completing their teacher education and training before becoming fully certified or licensed educators. They typically participate in academic coursework as well as practical teaching experiences, such as student teaching or internships, to develop their skills in real classroom settings. The goal is to prepare them with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence needed to be effective teachers once they begin their professional careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pre service teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pre Service Teacher, you need a solid grasp of educational theory, lesson planning, and foundational subject knowledge, typically acquired through enrollment in a teacher preparation program. Familiarity with classroom technologies, assessment tools, and learning management systems is often expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and classroom management skills help pre service teachers connect with students and respond to diverse learning needs. These abilities are essential for creating effective learning environments and building the competencies required for a successful teaching career.

What are some common challenges pre service teachers face during their field placements, and how can they overcome them?

The Aurora City School District is seeking to hire a reliable Building Substitute Teacher to provide consistent, high-quality instructional coverage in our elementary schools. This contracted position guarantees work for four (4) school days per week when school is in session, offering stability and familiarity within a single school building.

Work Schedule: This position is contracted for 4 school days per week during days/weeks when school is in session. The day off will typically be in the middle of the week with required work days on Mondays and Fridays when school is in session. However, the assigned day off may shift in weeks containing a school holiday (e.g., a Monday off during a week with a holiday like Martin Luther King Jr. Day).

Daily Rate: $125 per day

Why Be an ACSD Building Substitute?

  • Consistency: Unlike an "as-needed" daily substitute, you will have a clearly defined work week and a consistent assignment at one school for an extended period.
  • Familiarity: Become a familiar and trusted face to students, staff, and the school community, fostering a more positive and effective learning environment.
  • Experience: Take advantage of the opportunity to teach on a regular basis and gain valuable experience in an exceptional school district.

The district is also accepting applications for traditional "as-needed" daily substitute teachers for those seeking more flexible, non-contracted work.

Core Responsibilities

The Building Substitute Teacher plays a vital role in maintaining educational continuity by performing the following duties:

  • Instruction: Deliver instruction effectively based on the regular teacher's lesson plans, covering subject content and skills aligned with Ohio's Learning Standards.
  • Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and orderly classroom environment. This includes keeping students on task and ensuring student conduct meets school standards.
  • Student Support: Interact with students and staff respectfully, answer general questions, distribute materials, and actively assist with their learning.
  • Administrative Tasks: Complete necessary administrative duties such as taking and reporting student attendance, managing classroom materials, creating seating charts, etc.
  • Collaboration: Consult with grade-level colleagues or building administrators immediately if lesson plans are incomplete or if assistance is needed to maintain instruction.
  • Professionalism: Adhere to the Ohio Licensure Code of Professional Conduct, maintain a positive and professional attitude, and report to work reliably and punctually.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following licensure requirements:

  1. A valid Ohio Professional or Permanent Teaching Licensure
  2. A valid Ohio Substitute Teaching Licensure
  3. A valid Pre-Service Teacher Permit

All candidates must successfully pass an FBI and BCI background check (Fingerprinting and Background Check required prior to employment).
