Job description

Position: CPHS Health Professions Advisor
Department: College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
Status: Full Time
Position Summary:
The CPHS Health Professions Advisor serves as the primary academic advisor for all pre-pharmacy and pre-nursing students and is responsible for current student nurturing by effectively managing the associated pre-professional development activities for the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. The CPHS Health Professions Advisor provides comprehensive educational planning, academic guidance, and professional development advising to students pursuing pharmacy and nursing careers while working intentionally and strategically with campus partners and other key stakeholders to assist students pursuing career in health-related fields including physician assistant studies, physical therapy, public health, and other health professions co-curricular engagement. The CPHS Health Professions Advisor will serve as a central point of contact for assigned pre-pharmacy and pre-nursing students and operate under the direction of the CPHS Office of Student Affairs. The position exercises substantial discretion and independent judgment in matters of academic significance affecting student progression, retention, graduation, and professional school readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Academic Advising and Educational Planning
  • Advise and manage a caseload of approximately 250 students.
  • Meet with all required students in the caseload at least twice per semester for academic progress and planning; available to meet with students for additional advising as needed.
  • Provide individualized academic advising to students regarding curriculum planning, degree requirements, General Education requirements, prerequisites for health professions programs, and progression toward graduation.
  • Evaluate complex academic records and develop individualized academic plans designed to support student success and achievement of educational and professional goals.
  • Analyze academic performance indicators and recommend strategies, interventions, course sequencing, and educational pathways to facilitate student progression.
  • Interpret and apply academic regulations, institutional policies, professional school admissions requirements, and curriculum standards when advising students.
  • Exercise independent judgment in assessing student circumstances and recommending appropriate academic actions, referrals, and interventions.
  • Lead the CPHS Student Affairs Office in the administration, implementation, and advanced use of university student information and engagement systems, including CIS, the early alert system, CRM, and related platforms.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of CPHS student events requiring all team member involvement. Planning responsibilities include interaction with faculty, administration community leaders and outside vendors.
  • Serve as an integral member of the Office of Student Affairs Team.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.

Health Professions Advising
  • Counsel students regarding preparation for competitive admission to health professions programs.
  • Review and evaluate academic credentials, experiential learning activities, professional competencies, personal statements, and application readiness.
  • Advise students regarding admissions trends, professional expectations, prerequisite completion, and career pathways within the health professions.
  • Develop individualized strategic preparation plans for students seeking admission to professional schools.
  • Provide guidance regarding application timelines, admissions processes, entrance examinations, clinical experiences, research opportunities, and professional development activities.

Administration of Academic Programs
  • Coordinate and administer advising programs and initiatives supporting student achievement and retention.
  • Develop, implement, and assess advising protocols, student success initiatives, workshops, and educational programming.
  • Monitor student academic progression and identify students requiring enhanced academic support.
  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and academic departments regarding student academic matters and institutional retention strategies.
  • Maintain advising records and prepare reports used in academic planning, assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Proficient utilization of university software management systems designed to aid in early alert identification and intervention and improve student success
  • Identify students experiencing academic difficulty and recommend appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Conduct comprehensive academic assessments and formulate individualized success plans.
  • Coordinate referrals to academic support services, tutoring, counseling, disability services, career services, and other institutional resources as appropriate.

Professional School Evaluation and Committee Functions
  • Participate and engage in pre-health advisory committees with CPHS and the university.
  • Evaluate student readiness for professional school applications and make recommendations concerning applicant competitiveness and preparedness.
  • Collaborate with professional schools, healthcare organizations, and professional associations regarding admissions expectations and student preparation initiatives.

Program Development and Leadership
  • Recommend policies, procedures, and program improvements related to academic advising and student success.
  • Develop informational materials, educational resources, and advising guides.
  • Analyze advising outcomes and recommend enhancements to institutional practices supporting student persistence and achievement.
  • Represent the institution at recruitment events, professional meetings, and educational conferences.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May supervise student workers, peer advisors, graduate assistants, and other support personnel. May provide functional leadership for advising initiatives and projects.

Education/Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of professional experience in academic advising, student affairs, health professions advising, counseling, or related educational administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum planning, academic policies, student development theory, and health professions admissions processes.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations, policies, and academic requirements.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Health Professions Education, Public Health, Biological Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience working in higher education health professions advising.
  • Experience administering student success, retention, or academic support programs.
  • Knowledge of admissions processes for multiple health professions disciplines.
  • Experience serving on admissions, progression, retention, or academic review committees.

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational development of students.
  • Comprehensive computer skills and experience, with the ability to quickly learn technology platforms including Colleague, Blackboard, Student Planning and Slate.
  • Ethical advising practices - ability to exercise high level of confidentiality, independent initiative, and ethical judgement congruent with university and professional ideals.
  • Organizational skills - ability to maintain records and have ready access to resources necessary for successful completion of position duties.
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet defined deadlines.
  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours and occasional requirements for travel, including overnight stays.
  • Broad knowledge of Campbell University policies and procedures and FERPA guidelines.
