External Relations Assistant (part-time, 17.5 hours/week)
The External Relations Assistant supports the Department of Computer Science's alumni engagement, communications, marketing, and event initiatives. This position assists with department branding and promotional materials, communications and outreach efforts, alumni and industry relations programs, and the planning and execution of key departmental events. The role collaborates with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners to strengthen relationships, enhance visibility, and advance departmental strategic goals.

What you'll do in this position:

  • Coordinate newsletters, outreach campaigns, and alumni communications.
  • Support alumni engagement activities, including Tech Trek and BYU Tech Society initiatives.
  • Maintain alumni databases and contribute to public relations strategies.
  • Create and maintain marketing materials, promotional content, and graphic design assets.
  • Ensure brand consistency in accordance with university guidelines.
  • Design content for social media, events, and communications campaigns.
  • Assist with planning and execution of departmental events, including scheduling, registration, catering, marketing, and logistics.
  • Manage event materials, calendars, and team coordination efforts.
  • Assist with merchandise inventory and ordering.
  • Support special projects and other departmental initiatives as assigned.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • Associate's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, graphic design, business administration, or a related field, and at least two years of related professional experience.
  • Experience creating graphic design and marketing materials using design software.
  • Experience coordinating or supporting events, including planning, logistics, and communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience providing customer service and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Strong graphic design and visual communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for special events.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, community partners, and other stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, graphic design, business administration, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of related experience.
  • Understanding of branding principles and brand management.
  • Leadership or team lead experience.
  • Adobe, Canva, or other design certifications.
  • Additional experience in graphic design, marketing communications, alumni relations, and event management.
