What You'll Do

Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, the Senior Commissioning Technologist is responsible to commission and test primary and secondary power equipment in the field which includes maintaining medium to high-voltage substation power delivery equipment such as breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers, relays and transformers. The Sr. Commissioning Technologist is also responsible to mentor and educate junior technologists including reading and interpreting prints, Risk Management and industry best practices. The Senior Commissioning Technologist also plays a leading role in setting up and operating standard as well as specialized test equipment to diagnose and analyze the performance of power delivery equipment on the job site.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Work safely alongside all members of the construction crew
  • Work with high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, Transformers, manual and motor operated switches, Current Transformers, Voltage Transformers, Capacitor Banks and circuit switchers.
  • Commission protection and control relays such as SEL, GE, Siemens and ABB.
  • Commission control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems.
  • Acceptance and maintenance testing of 600v to 500kV electrical equipment
  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment, SCADA in medium to high-voltage transmission substations such as differential, distance, line protections, transformer protections, overcurrent, etc.
  • Interpret prints, analyze test reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work with high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems
  • Supervise, mentor and train junior technicians
  • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer’s test equipment:
    • Omicron CMC356, CT analyzer, Cibano, CPC100, Votano, Testrano
    • Doble M4100, SFRA
    • Megger megohmmeter and 10A Ductor
    • Broman 100A Ductor
    • Megger TTR
    • Dilo and SMC Gas Analyzers
    • VLF and AC Hi Pots

This is a full-time, permanent position.

  • Employees based in Calgary work locally within Southern Alberta, while those based in Edmonton work locally within Northern Alberta.
  • There are also opportunities to travel to other regions if interested.

Schedule & Compensation

Schedule rotations range from 4 days on / 3 days off or 8 days on / 6 days off, etc.

Standard workdays are 10 hours (7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

Overtime paid at time and a half after 10 hours per day and 40 hours per week

Out-of-town work includes either all-inclusive camp accommodations or LOA and individual accommodations (project dependent)

Additional Information

This position is designated as safety-sensitive making employment contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as criminal and general background checks.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution or Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in Field Testing and Commissioning
  • Experience in substations required (ex. 600v to 500kV)
  • Experience with relay testing with various equipment an software
  • Familiar with power transformers, high voltage switches, breakers, CT’s and PT’s, NGR, and Capbank
  • Past experience with testing software will be beneficial (Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000, AcSELerator, Siemens Digsi, GE Enervista)
  • Competent and comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Willing to work out of town and on rotation, (ex. 4 on 3 off work schedule)
