About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established organization within the energy and utility sector, is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to join their engineering team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical distribution and substation systems through the design, analysis, coordination, and maintenance of protection and control schemes.

The successful candidate will contribute to grid reliability and system performance by leading protection studies, developing relay settings, supporting field operations, and providing technical expertise on power system protection philosophies and technologies. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys combining technical analysis, system planning, and operational support in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, review, and maintain protection and control systems for electrical distribution and substation assets.
  • Perform protection coordination studies and develop relay settings to ensure system reliability and compliance with industry standards.
  • Conduct power system analysis and investigations related to system disturbances, equipment performance, and power quality concerns.
  • Support commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities related to protection and control equipment.
  • Analyze event records, fault data, and relay operations to identify causes of system events and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide technical guidance to operations, maintenance, engineering, and field personnel regarding protection system performance and best practices.
  • Participate in system planning initiatives and reliability improvement projects.
  • Assist with the development and continuous improvement of protection standards, engineering practices, and asset management strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on capital projects, system upgrades, and modernization initiatives.
  • Support regulatory compliance requirements and engineering documentation processes.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration is considered an asset.
  • Experience in protection and control engineering, power system engineering, or electrical utility environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Protection coordination principles
    • Distribution and substation systems
    • Protective relay technologies
    • Power system studies and analysis
    • Electrical system design and operation
  • Experience supporting electrical utility, industrial power, transmission, or distribution environments is highly desirable.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays.
  • Working knowledge of power system analysis software such as:
    • CYME
    • EasyPower
    • ETAP
  • Exposure to electrical system planning, reliability engineering, or asset management programs.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's electricity sector, utility operations, or regulatory requirements is considered an asset.
  • Project management experience is an asset.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma.
  • Knowledge of ISO55000 asset management principles is considered beneficial.
