Electrical Power Studies Engineer - New York, NY / remote also available
Our client is a Engineering Design Company that is a leader in the data center space. They provide design, consulting and management expertise in Data Center / Mission Critical Facilities Space with the mindset to provide reliability, energy efficiency, sustainable design when providing these consulting services for Enterprise, Colocation, and Hyperscale Data Center Projects. This challenging and unique role will have the opportunity to partner with all levels of engineering and design staff to develop power studies for projects once design has been completed. Design projects are primarily focused around critical power systems for new data centers and expansions to existing data centers in the hyperscale / colocation markets. They will have experience and in-depth knowledge of Electrical Power Distribution System design and installation. This person will work as part of the Engineering Team and interact closely with organizational leadership to complete Power Systems Studies. Working and communicating with internal team and clients effectively while following company's guidelines with company's goals, objectives and values in mind.

Responsibilities:

  • Autonomous in day-to-day work with being given high level instruction on projects or assignments
  • Execute and lead design teams and designs of complex scope, and coordinate activities of other personnel as needed
  • Mentor engineers and assist with training and development to create a learning and growing environment
  • Lead Power Systems Studies focused in the mission critical data center industry
  • Independently perform Power System Studies for mission critical data center projects
  • Evaluate Equipment: Assess equipment capabilities, ratings, and conditions (transformers, circuit breakers, capacitors, etc.); Determine if Equipment meets system requirements
  • Lead efforts: proposal development, training / mentoring, and development of standards / automations to improve deliverables
  • Conduct Power Systems Studies and produce reports along with final deliverables including breaker settings tables, TCC's, and arc flash labels
    • Load Flow Studies: Analyze current and future system load to ensure power delivery without overloading components
    • Short Circuit Analysis: Evaluate potential fault conditions to determine the system's response and ensure that equipment ratings are not exceeded
    • Protection Coordination: Study the settings of protective devices such as relays, circuit breakers, and fuses to ensure they coordinate correctly and provide optimal protection
    • Arc Flash Analysis: Conduct studies to determine potential arc flash hazards, calculate incident energy, and recommend safety practices and protective equipment
    • Transient Stability Analysis: Evaluate the power system's ability to maintain synchronism after large disturbances, such as faults or sudden changes in load, motor starting, etc.
  • Develop proposals including project scope, schedule and budget
  • Effective time management of project design team including forecasting resources and resource coordination
  • Identify potential project scope changes; aid in development of strategies to minimize impact and changes from estimated costs and project deadlines
  • QA/QC peer reviews for projects which candidate is not the engineer
  • Optimize workflow and deliverables by developing templates, standards, automations, etc.

Requirements:

  • 5-10+ year's Electrical Engineering experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar engineering degree
  • Licensed PE / EIT a Plus
  • Possess advanced knowledge of electrical topologies associated with mission critical facilities
  • Experience designing electrical power systems for complex data center/mission critical facilities
  • Experience with Protective Devices: relays, circuit breakers, and fuses with knowledge of how they function, what versions and device settings
  • Understand ratings, capabilities, and conditions of various power system equipment
  • SME of industry and safety standards related to power systems, with emphasis related to arc flash hazards and other safety-related matters
  • Understand effects and requirements of connecting new generation or loads to existing systems
  • Power system simulation software with one of the following: ETAP, PSS/E, SKM, Easy Power
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Skilled at reviewing design drawings and equipment submittals
  • Perform code analysis including selection of equipment, wiring, etc. to meet code requirements
  • Conduct code analysis and possess advanced knowledge of electrical codes
  • Analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Client facing experience and at times serve as primary point of client contact on various projects
  • Ability to successfully work independently; Self Starter and should prioritize well
  • Effective communicator - both oral and written form (tech and non-tech)
  • Proactive, resourceful, and a multitasker
  • Exceptional organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and in a timely manner
  • Previous experience in the Military / Military Veterans a huge plus!
  • Minimal Travel: 10-20%
