How much do power grid engineering jobs pay per year?
What is a power grid engineering job?
A Power Grid Engineering job involves designing, maintaining, and improving electrical power systems that distribute electricity from generation sources to consumers. Engineers in this field work on substations, transmission lines, and protection systems to ensure grid reliability and efficiency. They also analyze load flows, develop grid expansion plans, and integrate renewable energy sources. The role requires knowledge of electrical engineering, power systems, and industry regulations.
What types of projects might a power grid engineering professional typically work on?
As a Power Grid Engineering professional, you might work on a variety of projects such as designing new substations, upgrading existing transmission or distribution infrastructure, integrating renewable energy sources, or improving grid reliability and efficiency. You could be involved in everything from initial concept and feasibility studies, to detailed system modeling, equipment specification, and overseeing installation or testing phases. Collaboration is common, as projects often require working closely with utility companies, construction teams, government regulators, and private sector partners. These experiences provide a diverse and challenging work environment, fostering both technical growth and the opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in power grid engineering, and why are they important?
To thrive in Power Grid Engineering, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and grid infrastructure design, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and certification, such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, ETAP, and SCADA systems is crucial, along with knowledge of regulatory codes and safety standards. Strong problem-solving, project management, and effective communication skills help you stand out, particularly when working in cross-functional teams and with diverse stakeholders. These competencies are vital for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of power grids in increasingly complex and technologically advanced environments.

Job description
Seeking a seasoned Test Engineering Manager to lead and scale our global test engineering teams responsible for validating mission-critical power grid automation and substation communication systems.
In this role, you will own the end-to-end test strategy, build high-performing geographically distributed teams, and drive quality excellence across hardware, firmware, and software releases that underpin electrical grid reliability.
This is a high-impact leadership position at the intersection of power systems engineering, telecommunications, and advanced test methodologies. You will collaborate closely with Product Management, System Engineers, Firmware, Hardware and Software Development teams and Field Engineering teams to ensure that deliverables meet the most demanding industry standards. This is a managerial-level position with at least 4-6 direct reports.#LI-CH1
Lead, mentor, and grow a globally distributed team of test engineers, senior test engineers, and team leads across multiple time zones and geographies.
Define team structure, headcount plans, and hiring roadmaps to meet project demands and organizational scale goals.
Foster a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, and cross-site collaboration.
Conduct regular performance reviews, career development conversations, and succession planning for critical roles.
Partner with site leads to harmonize test practices across regional hubs (e.g., North America, Europe, India).
Define and own the comprehensive test strategy for the UA business including Integration Testing, Regression Testing, Smoke Testing, Compliance Testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
Actively participate in Requirements Gathering, Requirements decomposition process to develop robust and holistic test plans.
Closely work with Product Management and Product Engineering teams to improve weak user stories, weak requirements and vague acceptance criteria.
Establish and govern quality gates throughout the product development lifecycle, from requirement validation to field deployment.
Champion a shift-left testing philosophy, embedding test activities earlier in the development cycle to reduce cost and cycle time.
Drive automation-first approaches for regression, protocol conformance, and performance test suites.
Oversee test coverage metrics, defect escape analysis, and root cause investigations to continuously improve test effectiveness.
Act as the primary interface of the Testing team for the Product Management, Systems engineering, Hardware, Firmware and Software development teams.
Represent test engineering in program reviews, DVR (Design Validation Review) meetings.
Communicate test status, risks, and mitigation plans to senior leadership with clarity and data-driven precision.
Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field is required.
10+ years of professional experience in Test Engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role overseeing multi-site or global teams.
Deep domain-expertise in Power Grid Automation and Substation Communication Systems.
Hands-on experience with engineering tools and test equipment.
Proven track record of designing and scaling test automation frameworks for complex, safety-critical embedded or networked systems.
Strong understanding of communication protocols: IEC 61850, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-10x, TCP/UDP, IEEE 1588/PTP.
Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and develop talent across geographically distributed engineering organizations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
