Technical Product Manager/ Power Generation Engineer

Location: Chesapeake, VA - On Site

Position Summary

Lead the technical direction of power generation solutions in a high-growth, high-impact segment


We are looking for a Technical Product Manager with a strong engineering foundation to drive product definition and decisions. This role requires deep technical credibility and commercial awareness to translate customer and market requirements into clear product specifications.


You will engage in technical discussions, evaluate system-level tradeoffs, and partner closely with customers and colleagues across Volvo Penta. This is not a purely commercial role-the successful candidate must operate credibly across engineering and commercial integration.


Based in Chesapeake, Virginia (US), you will report to the Director of Product Planning located in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Key Responsibilities


Market Insight & Competitive Positioning

  • Monitor power generation industry trends and emerging technologies
  • Shape product direction and identify new opportunities
  • Benchmark existing market offerings to identify where we can differentiate and add customer value
  • Develop clear competitive insights to position our power solutions effectively
  • Actively seek customer needs to inform product design


Product Strategy, Definition, Development & Lifecycle Ownership

  • Drive product and investment decisions in a complex, capital-intensive environment
  • Make product decisions where choices have a multi-decade impact
  • Work within Volvo Penta globally to integrate needs in projects and design
  • Translate customer requirements into product specification
  • Partner with global Product Development teams
  • Incorporate regional requirements in global product design
  • Define performance targets (power, fuel efficiency, noise) and regulatory considerations
  • Define system architecture and requirements across applications
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs, integration challenges, and feasibility
  • Engage in customer visits, market reviews, and product planning activities
  • Support the full product lifecycle-from concept, design, and development through launch, scaling, and end-of-life planning
  • Navigate evolving emissions, safety, and regulatory standards to ensure products meet current and future compliance expectations
Who are you?

You are a degreed engineer with strong technical depth and credibility.


You have a strong understanding of power generation, grid infrastructure, data center environments, utility engineering and related areas. You likely understand how data centers are designed, powered, and operated, as well as the role reliable power plays in ensuring performance and uptime.


You can bring customer needs and scan available technologies to make sound, practical product decisions. You work effectively across functions and geographies, building trust with colleagues, to move work forward and influence outcomes.


The successful candidate must be able to operate credibly with engineers on design, integration, and performance matters. We are not seeking a commercial/marketing product manager for this position.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required (such as mechanical, electrical, controls, or similar)
  • Master's degree in engineering or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of industry technical experience in power/energy generation, power grid engineering/grid integration, utility engineering, power systems, or related
  • Proven knowledge of power/engine systems, backup power systems, gen sets, engine technologies, grid technology/landscape, data center design/development
  • Working knowledge of emerging powertrain technologies (electrification, alternative fuels, hybrid systems, connectivity, remote diagnostics) preferred.
  • Experience working with complex industrial products, equipment, engines, power systems, energy systems, or similar
  • Strong credibility working with directly with commercial and engineering teams
  • Clear interpersonal skills and ability to interface with all levels of employees, leaders, customers, suppliers, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Advanced communication and presentation skills in both US and global contextsFully proficient with Microsoft 365 tools
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English. Bilingual (English plus Spanish, Swedish, etc.) a plus

For this position, the base pay is set at $143,600 - $177,300 ย annually, and where applicable, bonus eligible. The range for this role, as well as final salary offered, is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, work-related knowledge, certifications, skills, education, and experience.
