DescriptionThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under close supervision of a Resident Engineer in the District 4, Pacifica Construction Office, in a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will perform field inspections and investigations, contractor and design document review, and contract administrative duties among other duties as assigned. The student assistant will develop an understanding of construction and contract administration.
RequirementsConditions of EmploymentThis is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

PrerequisitesMust be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Work ScheduleFlexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work ScheduleStudent Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation$18.28 - $28.16 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Preferred Qualifications- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist with the functional aspects of the construction progress pay system, review and verify engineering item quantity calculations to justify additional resources & time, monitor expenditures on construction contracts, and verify method of payment with the contract checking engineering calculations. Assist in technical reviews, audit and process requests for daily extra work bills from the Contractor. Draft for construction projects the legally binding Contract Change Order (CCO) engineering document, contract estimates, transmittal memorandums and other documents & reports involved in construction projects for Residents Engineer's review and approval.
- In a learning capacity the Student Assistant's duties will include researching cost analysis data in construction contract files, development of power point presentations, and maintaining an inventory of technical support equipment. Assist in preparation of status documents, progress charts, and reports for District Construction Management and Corporate (headquarters). Assist in training preparation, coordination, and execution to include developing training outlines and courses, preparing training handouts, coordinating training sites, reviewing and updating existing courses and manuals.
- In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will be provided first-hand exposure to field engineering work including construction-surveying responsibilities, sampling and testing of materials, verifying that materials incorporated into the project comply with the contract documents, verifying field dimensions for structure/roadway in construction. The student will also assist a Field Engineer during all phases of construction,
including earthwork operation, roadway paving, roadway excavation, drainage work and other construction operation fulltime or intermittent inspections. Attend training as deemed mandatory or necessary, which may require travel and overnight stay. - In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant may perform other duties, in a learning capacity, within the scope of the unit as required.
Physical RequirementsSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office and in a field environment.
Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.
