Key Responsibilities
The Power Electronics & Controls Engineer - Microgrid Systems is responsible for the design, development, validation, and deployment of power electronic converters and their associated control algorithms for grid-connected and islanded microgrid and energy infrastructure systems. This role focuses on delivering robust, standards-compliant control solutions for applications such as BESS, PCS, inverters, solid-state transformers (SST), and microgrid systems - while collaborating closely with hardware, firmware, protection, and systems engineering teams.
Main Accountabilities
  • Own the control system architecture and design for power electronic converters (AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC) deployed in microgrid and data center environments.
  • Develop real-time control algorithms to ensure stability, performance, and grid compliance under normal and abnormal operating conditions.
  • Ensure designs meet functional, performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements across the product lifecycle.
  • Support system-level integration of power converters into microgrids, utility interconnections, data center, and industrial environments.
  • Drive technical decisions related to control strategy trade-offs, dynamic performance, and grid interaction behavior.
  • Provide technical leadership during product development reviews, design validation, and customer or third-party technical discussions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, modeling practices, and design standards.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
Design and implement control algorithms for:
  • Grid-forming, grid-following, and grid-supporting converters
  • Voltage, current, power, frequency, and DC-link regulation
  • Droop control, virtual inertia, PLL-based synchronization
  • Multi-converter parallel operation and power sharing
  • Develop fast inner-loop and supervisory-level controls with appropriate bandwidth separation.
  • Implement fault ride-through, black-start, islanding detection, and reconnection logic.
  • Collaborate with system architects, EMS/SCADA teams, protection engineers, and product managers.
  • Support proposal, concept, and customer-specific solution development with technical input.
  • Provide clear documentation of control logic, interfaces, assumptions, and limitations.
  • Systems thinker - able to balance control performance, hardware limits, grid requirements, and operational constraints.
  • Structured problem solver - approaches complex technical problems methodically and transparently.
  • Technical communicator - can clearly explain control concepts to non-controls experts, customers, and leadership.
  • Collaborative mindset - works effectively across disciplines and organizational boundaries.
  • Ownership & accountability - takes responsibility for technical outcomes from concept through deployment.
  • Adaptability - comfortable working in evolving architectures and handling ambiguous requirements.
  • Attention to detail - maintains rigor in documentation, testing, and validation

Minimum Qualifications
      • Strong fundamentals in:
        • 5 - 6 Years of relevant skills in the following areas:
        • Control theory (linear and non-linear systems)
        • Power electronics topology and converter design
        • Electrical power systems and grid dynamics

        Hands-on experience with:
        • Inverter-based resources (BESS, PV, PCS, UPS, STATCOM, SST, etc.)
        • Embedded control implementation (DSP, FPGA, or similar platforms)
        • Real-time simulation and HIL testing
        • Proficiency in modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSCAD).
        • Understanding of grid dynamics, fault behavior, protection coordination, and microgrid operating modes.
        • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, control block diagrams, and system-level architecture.

Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with microgrid controllers, EMS, or plant-level supervisory controls.
    • Exposure to utility interconnection processes and grid code compliance.
